GREAT FIRE AT GISBORNE.
By Telegraph.] Gisborne, February 12. A fire broke out last night about 8 p m,, in Best’s drapery store. All the buildings in the block were speedily reduced to ashes. The total estimated loss is .£25,000. The total insurances on the property are =£14,650, distributed among-t the insurance offices as follows : —National, <£l3UO; Union Company, ,£1900; South British, JS80o; Victoria, .£9OO ; Norwich Union, .£9OO ; Hawke’s Bay, .£900; Standard, ; New Zealand, >. The buildings burnt down are - The IBank of New Zealand (old and now buildings), Adams’ stationer’s shop, Good’s watchmaker’s, Cooper’s shoemaker’s, Bradley’s stables, Gisborne C.ub, Albion Hotel, Adams’ warehouse and shop, and private residence. _ A strong southerly wind prevailed, otherwise the whole town would have been reduced to ashes.
