NEW ZEALAND TELEGRAMS. [per pbkss agency.] Hokitika, February 12. A man named Stevenson was killed at Stafford yesterday afternoon, by a tree falling on him while working in a sluicing claim. Death was instantaneous. He leaves a widow and seven young children. Gisborne, February 12. A great fire occurred here last evening. The Albion Hotel, Mr Best's draper's and grocer's shop, Nasmyth's jewellor's shop, and Bradley's stables and others were burnt. The fire originated either in Best's or Nasmyth's place. Wellington, February 12. The Hyderabad has gone broadside on to the beach with a list to seaward, and is reported as
much shaken. It is said that the majority of the members of the Athenaeum are in favor of opening the institution on Sundays. It is expected Walsh will be hanged on the 21st instant.
The body of J. P. Jones, bookseller, who had been missing some time, was found floating in the water at an early hour this morning,and taken to the Morgue. Another public meeting is to be called to discuss the drainage question. The Premier has notified to the Chamber of Commerce that ha i will consist with the Minister of Lands with regard to the granting a site for a sailors' hgtue.
