NOTES ON THE DUNEDIN RACES. |BY TELKGBArH IBOM OUB OWN CORBBSPONDBNT.] Dunedin, February 11. " Pegasus" in the " Star" writes as follows— The weather this morning was very lino and mild, and some good work done at Forbury. The course was a little holding after late rains, but promises to be in good condition in time for the races. All the horses out worked outside the hurdles, the tan gallop being in a very unsatisfactory state,! though the Jockey Club are at length taking steps to improve it by laying down a fresh coating of tan. Macgregor was first on the ground, with Numa and Boadicoa The former was sent four times round in clothing, and was pulling hard all the way. The chesnut filly went for a sweat, also going two rounds steadily. Blue Peter did not put in an appearance. Cotton had King Philip, Kildare, and Larrikin over the ground, but none of the three worked, umess at a very early hour. Arthur Smith's lot this morning comprised six, and the first three to shape were Cloth of Gold, Dead Heat, and Benjiroo. They were sent, with their rugs on, fully two miles and a half, steadily at first but warming up as they progressed. Tbo Australian Beemed to move best, Cloth of Gold and Dead Heat going anything but freely during the first part of the gallop. The last round occupied 2min. lOsec. Sir James and >wede were treated to three milos at half speed. Vampire went a slashing two mile spin in olothing by himself, covering the last round in 2min. lOmin. Goodman had all his contingent out, and af <er giving thorn a breather took the clothing off tho lot. The York and Chancellor, the lat or with Goodman up, then started near the distance post, picking up Lampooner and Yattendon a d Frolic colt at the the stand ; and went once round a regular docker. The big sprawling son of Gazelle had shot his bolt at three quarters of a mile, but the Sydney colt stuck well to Vork and Chancellor, and gave a very satisfactory impression of what his capabilities will be when he is more matured. Chancellor, although heavily weighted, had the foot of his companion all the way, and as Goodman was driving him along, he showed no want of gameness. he also pulled up without blow or softness of condition. The round from the Stand was done in 2 min. 4 sec The betting market during the week has not seen many startling changes. Two or three horses hardened in price, and of these Chancellor especially, lie was backed for something over a thousand at 10 to 1, and being still more in demand, he speedily advanced to 7to 1, and may now be looked upon as actually first favorite for the cup. Templeton has also shortend in price, being much inquired for of late; the last offer against him is 100 to 14. Mata still remains firm at 8 to 1, but without much support beins? accorded to him. Titania at 100 to 12, and Fishhook at 100 to 10, receive a little attention.
