RIFLE MATCH.
Engineers v. Artillery.
This mutch, which haa been talked 0? for more than twelve months past, 7:eirig a •challenge by the Artillery, was fired at the Cashmere range on Saturday last, and resulted in a win for the Engineers. At the time the challenge was given, ndds were laid on the Artillerymen, and continued up to the day of firing, but the result was against them, though a very close contest. The conditions of the match were that the Artillerymen should fire through the ranges 200, 300, 400 .and 500 yards, five shots at each range, with their carbines ; the Engineers to fire with their own rifles ; on the completion thereof, the competitors to change arms. The difference in firing with the tv/o arms is very great, going from the long Bnider to the short carbine being ti an the reverse ohange, and this was exemplified by the low scores of several of the Engineers in_ comparison with their scores made by their own weapon. The chances were much in favor of the Artillerymen, as they understand the use of the carbine, and the majority of them fire constantly with the Snider. No brilliant scores were made, although Corporal Chapman's score at 200 —all bull's eyes —should be specially mentioned. He is the highest aggregate scorer with the two weapons. In the Engineers, Lieutenant Appleby was first firing with the rifle, and Corporal Chapman first when firing with the carbine. In the Artillery, Gunner Sinclair was first when firing with the carbine, and Sergeant-Major Raven when firing with the rifle. The following are the full scores : ARTILLERY.
