1 PER PRESS AGENCY ] Hokitika, February 10. There is a fresh discovery of gold reported in a back creek, three miles above Woodstock, in the Kanieri distrist. Payable wash dirt was met with on Saturday. Wellington, February 10. An accident occurred yesterday at the Horokiwi Valley, Mr and Mrs Nichol and their four children were in a trap, and when turning n sharp bend where the road is icry narrow, iu consequence of its having been much cut aw«y of late the horse shied, and the whole party, with the trap and horse, were precipitated over a perpendicular bank more than 3uft, high. Three of the sufferers were so injured as to Lave to be conveyed to the hospital. J he eldest girl, about nine years of age, had her skull fractured, losing portions of her brain, and received a compound fracture of one arm. Sh < is not expected to recover, as she now lies in a very p ecarious state. The other children were much bruised, shaken, and cut about. The baby in Mrs Nichols arms escaped unhurt, though the mother was much hurt and shaken. Mr Nichol and one of the children escaped with little or no damage The horse was much bruised and cut and the trap entirely smashed. It is stated that the land tax valuers appointed now number 214. On the occasion of presenting the Wellington Gold Cup won by Mr R. Kay’s Maritana, Dr. Diver, in responding to the toast of the stewards, said they would endeavor to have the railway extended to the racecourse next year. Mr Jones, a storekeeper who disappeared from his home last Tuesday, has not yet turned (t has been decided to allow the Hyderabad fo drift upon the sands as far as she will go, wdien the remainder of her cargo will bo taken out and carted to Foxton. The hull will be then condemned and sold. The total amount paid away in connection with the Wellington races is ,£I2SL The principal prize-takers are —R. Kay, >£t(s and gold cup ; Butler, .£2Ol ; Vallauce, 0£21!7 ; Belcher, Knight, and Mclvor, .£7l each. There were a number of smaller sums paid to different owners of horses. Wellington, February 10. His Excellency the Governor, having accepted an invitation to dine with the members of the Christchurch Club, will leave here by the Arawata to-morrow. He will hold a levee at Christchurch on the 12th and return to Wellington iu time to hold a levee there on the 15th, and, with Lady Normanby and suite, will take hi* final departure per the Ringarooma. He will hold a levee at Dunedin on the Itlth [from our own correspondent.] Auckland, February 10. The City of Sydney took 250 tons of Bay of Island coal. The captain expiessed satisfaction with the despatch in supplying it. Ho said that
mail steamers will probably soon become con* siderablc eon-umers of the Bay coal. Messrs Sheehan and Fonghey’a tender for 4110,000, for the Hdensville terminus, Raipara railway, is accepted. The work is to be commenced immediately. A meeting of settlers at Wangarei passed a resolution in favor of pushing on the railway to Russel!. Sir Robert Douglas addressed his electors and received a vote of thanks. Kicks’ Georgia Minstrels opened on Saturdayto a crowded house. Invercargill, February 10. A telegram received here this morning s iys that Mr Conyers is convalescent, and will be sent home about Saturday nest.
