NEWS OF THE DAY.

Larbieinism.—An instance of the mischief done by the idle lads who stand round street corners was to be seen this morning at Mr Price's, Hereford street East. The Postoffice receiving-box had been furnished yesterday afternoon with a new plate, show ing the hours of clearing. This morning it was discovered that a large portion of the inscription had been cut away. Only a short time since a shop window in the same locality had a considerable amount of its sashes cut out. It is to be hoped that the police may gain information which will lead to the apprehension of the perpetrators of these senseless outrages.

Habboub Boaed Elections. —The time for the nomination of gentlemen to represent the city of Christchurch on the Lyttelton Harbour Board closed at noon to-day, when the following names were posted up outside the City Council Chambers by tho Returning Officer : —Robert Allan, Frederick Jenkins, and Henry Sawtell. As only two members are to be returned, a poll will take place on Monday, between the hours of nine and six o'clock.

Picnic.—The employees at Messrs Toomer's boot factory started, about 10 a.m., iti several 'buses, accompanied by their band, for Sumner, where no doubt a very pleasant day will be spent. Resident Magistrate's Court. —A few cases of drunkenness were disposed of to-day. Robert Vinson, on remand, charged with misappropriation of a chequo for £24, has his bail enlarged to Napier where the alleged misappropriation occurred. Board op Education.—The ordinary meeting of the Board of Education took place at 3 o'clock yeßterday afternoon, at the Normal school, when business of the usual character was transacted. Police Couet Accommodation. —In consequence of the Resident Magistrate's Court being yesterday used for the hearing o£ civil cases, the charges against the railway guard for embezzlement were heard in the City Council Chambers. Theateb Royal.—The Uncle Tom Combination company, which has recently been playing bo successfully in Dunedin, will open here to-morrow evening at the Theatre Royal. In addition to the strong company brought with them from Melbourne, the management have engaged Mrs Walter Hill and Mr Musgrave, who will appear as Eliza Harris and Phineas respectively. Lyttelton Colonists' Society. The committtee of this society held their usual monthly meeting on Wednesday evening ; the president, Mr J. C. Boddington, in the chair. In addition to the usual business, the plans and specifications for the proposed alterations and additions were considered, and it was resolved to call for tenders for carrying out the alteration!. Interpbotincial Cricket MATCn.~In order to give increased facilities to the Canterbury and Otago Elevens to practise for the forthcoming match, it has been determined to abandon the matches arranged te be played on the Association ground on Saturday next, with the exception of the Association match North v South, which will be continued. Eight of the Otago Eleven arrived by the express train last night. The rest of the team are expected to-morrow Herr Bunz's Benefit.—This gentleman, who has been for some years connected with musical matters hero, takes a benefit to-night at the Theatre Royal. The programme includes the names of Mdlle. Cliarbonnet, Signora Yenosta, Mrs A. Toke, Miss Florence Colville, Mrs Walter Hill, Misses Lily and Arethusa May, Signor Lusetti, Messrs Marshall, W. Hill, &c. The King of Pain will also appear. Such a variety of talent should draw a full house. Diooksan Sunday School Association, —The monthly meeting of this association was held last night; Mr Webb in the chair. Rev. H. C. M. Watson opened a discussion on " The Sunday School its Object and Teaching," in which the clergy and several of the laymen joined. The necessity of distinctive church teaching was insisted on. A cordial vote of thanks to Mr Watson, and an intimation that the next meeting would be hqld on the 6th March, in St. Michael's schoolroom, brought a very interesting meeting to a close.

Watke Supply Committee— Tho water supply committee, consisting of Councillors Cass (chairman), Gapes, and Ayers, met at the City Council Offices yesterday morning. Mr White was present, and informed the committee that he had sunk ono 2 inch artesian pipe twenty-five feet into the bed of the Waimakariri above McLean's, and that he whs still proceeding with the experiment. A U-tter was read from the town clerk of Melbourne, giving some particulars of the Melbourne water supply, in accordance with the wishes of the Christchurch City Council. Tho committee then adjourned. They will not be able to draw up a report until the experiments on which they are now engaged are completed. Marble Quarry Company.—The peneral meeting of the shareholders of tho Marble Quarry Company will be held this evening, at tho City Hotel.

Additional Cadle News.—The following items of news appear in the "Timaru Herald" of yesterday :—" London, February 4th.—A ' Daily Telegraph' despatch from St Pttetsburg Bays the wonderful successes of the British forces in Afghanistan have completely upset all Russian calculations, as it was the general belief the troops -would meet with a stout resistance, or perish in the snow. Berlin, February 4-Lh.—The military cordon established on the frontier has, it is reported, given great offence to Russia. An outbreak of Nihilists has occurred at Moscow. Papers found on one of the arreted persons, point to a complete revolutionary organisation."

Pavitt, Monclr, Beaumont, Thompson, Nalder, F. Bam--I'ord, J. Bunrford, J. Davis, E. Buxton, H, Buxton, F. L. Davis, Clark. The following will represent the U.C.C.C.:— Messrs A. S. Baker, J. Dawe, H. Wood, B. Peter, E. J. Ross, W. B. Perceval, M. Lcwin, H. S. Smith, F. Robinson. A coach will str.rt from the White Hart at two o'clock. Any of the above who are unable to play are requested to let the secretary know. The following will be the Eastern Club's team in their match against the Avonside C.C. on Saturday next: —Messrs Blakely, Crowe, Collins, Gee, Hales, Eliott, Hook, Rogers, Mountfort, R., Martin, Shackleton. Emergencies Lawson, Morris, C, Nixon. The team will meet at the Post Office at 1.45 p.m. sharp. The return match between the Hagley Oak Leaf and Eastern Clubs will be commenced on Saturday next, on the ground of the former. Play to commence at 2 p.m. The following will play for the Hagley Oak Leaf : —Messrs H. V. Anson (captain), G. Booth, J. Caygill, C. Frith, J. Gibb, J. Hopper, A. Johnson, J. Luak, W. H. Smith, R. H.
