NELSON CITY ELECTION.

[from ottr own correspondent.] Nelson, February 6. There was great excitement to-day over the election of a member of the House of Eepresentatives for Nelson City in the room of Mr bharp, resigned. Both candidates Messrs Acton Adams and A. Pitt —addressed meetings of the electors last night, and both were well received. The result of the polling to-day wa3 as follows: — Adams 369 Pitt 252 Majority for Adams 117 Although expectation seemed to favor Mr Adams' chance, it was not anticipated that he would have been returned by so large a majority, and it is stated that many electors must have pledged themselves to support both candidates. [Press Special Wire.] Nelson, February 6. On the result of the poll to-day being made known, there was tremendous excitement, and Mr Adams, who was driving a pony carriage, was stopped, the pony taken out, and a number of his supporters drew him to his committee room, where there was much congratulatory speechifying. The result of the election is regarded here as a strong expression of public opinion against the Catholic block vote. Many of Mr Adams' supporters were earnest in their advocacy of secular education par so, and many believed him for local reasons to be the best representative. The opposition to the block vote was strongly marked throughout the whole contest. Up to the declaration of the poll, both were perfectly sanguine, relying upon the promises made to thsm, ar.d the large majority obtained surprised everybody.
