[per press agency. I Port Chalmers, February 5. A passenger by the Kastcrhill, named A. J. Wylie, makes a startling statement to the effect that on January 9th, at 8 a.m., toe sea being comparatively smooth, William Taylor, the ship’s boy, aged seventeen years, fell from the main royal mast, broke a ratliu, struck tbe rail, and fell overboard. A seaman named Johnston jumped after and endeavored to save him, but did moS succeed, and was drawn on board. The vessel was only going two knots an hour, but no effort beyond this was made to save the boy, who floated as tbe ship passed out of sight. Bluff, February 5. Mr George W. Nicbol was elected to-day first Mayor of C.mpbell Town. He polled sixtyfour votes, bis opponent, Mr T. J. Warren, only getting nineteen. [Pivss SjK'cial Wire.] Auckland, February 5. At tbs Auckland Presbytery to-day, the Kev. R. Somerville was elected Moderator. The Presbytery adopted a memorial to the General Assembly in favor of abolishing public collections for the Assembly expenses, and substituted instead a levy of one per (tent, on the funds paid by congregations for stipend or otherwise. _ Communications were received from various districts relative to tbe inauguration of the sustentation fund established by the General Assembly of tbe Presbyterian Church of New Zealand. Mr McNicol thought the reasons given by the New Plymouth Church ought to have been more clearly stated. He would move that the benefits of the sustsntation fund be not extended to New Plymouth. The Rev. Mackay moved an amendment —‘‘ That those congregations which are not in a position to raise ,£2OO to enable them to have the benefit of the sustentation fund remain for tbe present under tbe Church extension fund. Ihe Rev. McNicol withdrew his amendment in favor of the motion,, and seconded Mr McKay’s motion. The Rev. Bruce said that the report ho had submitted an agreement of committees in differentdistricts. Tbe motion was carried. Great interest is felt in tbe race between the schooners Transit and Torea to-morrow for £l5O. Tauranga, February 5.

The “ Bay of Plenty Times” reporter at Taupo wires-—“ A gross insult has been offered to the representative of the Government here by Rewi Ngatimaniopoto. Rewi sent a message to Major Scannel yesterday expressing a desire to see him, but as the Major’s horse was not at baud he was unable to go. To-day he wont to Oanui, where Rewi was, accompanied by Dr, Walker and an interpreter. After mutual greetings, Kewi coolly rolled himself up in a blanket and composed himself to sleep. Half an hour’s silence ensued, when Major Scannel said to him—' You sent for me. What have you to say ?’ Rewi answered that he did not send for him, and had nothing to say. Major Scannel then said— 1 If you have nothing to say to mo I will go,’ and left the whare without taking formal leave.”

There are some murmurs of dissatisfaction at the Gas Company giving no intimation of any intention to reduce the price of gas after the handsome dividend declared. The reclaimed land sections are said to have already risen 25 per cent., one purchaser of two sections having been offered ,£IOOO advance on what he paid. Some of the land tax valuers here have again applied for the use of the Corporation assessment lists, but were again refused. The Hinemoa goes to Auckland to-morrow to take the Commissioners on Higher Education, she is to bring down the incoming San Francisco mail, due on Tuesday next. Mr Barton, M.H.R., has sold his house and grounds at the Hutt. Wm Wakeham a farmer, of Wairunomata, who was thrown from a restive horse a day or two ago, died this morning. Mr Jones, a bookseller, of Courtenay Place, who has been in a depressed state of mind for the last few days, disappeared early yesterday morning, and ha« not been seen since He lately came from the Thames.

Mr Alexander Bartleman. Inspector of the Colonial Bank, has resigned his po ition, and intends to go into business in Dunedin on his own account.

It is stated that an effort will be made to get the South Dunedin and Caversham municipalities to return Mr D. Proudfoot as their representative on the Harbor Board. The election takes place on Monday night. The committee appointed by the Synod to take steps to procure tbe rc-iutroductiou of the Bible into the schools, met to-day. It was resolved to draw up a petition for presentation to Parliament, and that it be sent for signature to all the ministers and sessions in Otago and Southland, in order that it may be extensively signed. It was also resolved to request ministers to bring the matter prominently before their congregations. The first annual meeting of the “Morning Herald ” Newspaper Company was held to day. The balance-sheet submitted showed a profit of over 21 per cent, on tbe capital of the company. A start was made in George street this morning with tbe work of laying the city tramway. At a deputation to Mr Macaudrow today, the question of the extension of Cumberland street right through to Anderson’s Bay was referred to by Mr Walter, and in reply Mr Macandrew promised that this should be done if the Government got adequate station accommodation. A site for a coal shod would have to be provided. The deputation from the Clutba County Council, which yesterday interviewed the Minister for Public Works in reference to the Baidu tha Bridge, were to-day informed that the Government would advance the County Counci 1 some money towards making the bridge. The amount, however, was not definitely stated. The annual meeting of the Otago Institute was held to-night, when an address was delivered by the retiring president, Mr W. N. Blair. Professor Hutton was elected president, and Professor Ulrich and Mr Blair vice-presidents for the ensuing year. Mr Blair, in the course of his speech, strongly advocated the establishment of an Industrial Museum in the city.

A meeting of delegates from the various Coursing Clubs of the Middle will be held in Dunedin to-morrow. The object is to establish n Waterloo meeting for the whole colony. The chief prize will probably be <£soo. As the result of a conference of master tailors and employes to-night, the threatened strike of Monday next has been avoided. The masters make a concession of 3 per cent. Invercargill, February 5. It is reported here that the Wallace County Council at its last meeting unanimously elected Mr J. E. Cuthbertson to represent it on the Bluff Harbor Board. A strong desire is expressed by a large section of the citizens to entertain the Marquis of Normauby before ho leaves the colony. It is hoped that he will make the Bluff his port of final departure, and in that case a very good reception will be accorded him here.
