A fire broke out at an early hour ibis morning at Karaka, outside Drabamstown, which destroyed four houses and shop. It started in the grocery store of a Mrs Campbell, widow. She was fortunately insured only a week ago for =£2so ,n the Norwich Insurance office. The fire broke out in the shop about an hour after the inmates had retired, and had a firm hold before it was detected. The alarm was given, and the brigades turned out, but the distance from the sheds in i-bortland and Grahamstown w s so gr -at that the adja ent buildings Were destroye d. Through the hard exertions of some willing hands the fire w s stopped from communicatiu g with the butcher’s shop of Mr George, and destroying it and other buildings near. N o cause is assigned for the fire. The shop was shut up safely, and the fire was extinguished with water when the occupants retired at 11.20. The gold cup to be run for at the ensuing races has just been manufactured by Kohn and Co. It is made of 18 carat gold, weighs 170za., and is worth illoo. A young lady, while bathing this afternoon, had a narrow escape. While jumping off the spring board the wind blow her bathing gown over her head.
