The steamer Wellington left Wellington for Otaki at 10 p.m. on Wednesday for the purpose of towing into Wellington the ship Hydrabad. During the night she experienced i fresh north-west g le, with heavy sea. At daylight she had a gale from west-north-west, with thick weather and high sea. At 6.30 a m. there was a very heavy gale, with high confused sea, the ship rolling very heavily. At 6.45 a.m. she was abreast of the stranded ship City of Auckland. At 8.50 am. signalled the Hydrabad, who answered in return; stood off and on unti 9.40, when the signals were repented for the third time—“ Return to port ” As the snrf was apparently breaking heavily around the ship, and finding it quite impossible to reader assistance, or further communicate, they shaped their course for Wellington at 2.45.
