o « C.R.C. MAIDEN FOURS. The maiden four-oar races in connection with the Canterbury Rowing Club came off on the Avon last evening, the course being from Butterfield's to the corner below Cowlishaw's, a distance of one mile. Tho events, for which three crews had entered, excited a good deal of interest amongst boating men, and the heats were particularly well contested, with the following result: — first heat. Electric (south bank)—G. C. Linauze, Lake, Haywood, McDougal (Wolerige cox) ... 1 Tyne (north bank) —Davie, M. S. Smith, Saltmarsh, Snow (Dunnage cox) 2 The boats were got away to an even start, but after the first few strokes the Electric drew ahead and held a good lead to just below Pratt's corner. Hero tho Tyne commenced to overhaul the leading boat, but on coming into the straight sho dropped behind again, the Electric reaching the winning post first, with plenty to spare. FINAL HEAT. Tyne (north bank)— Trischler, Morgan, Allison, M'Glashan (Dixon cox) 1 Electric (south bank)—G. C. Lanauz9, Lake, Haywood, McDougal (Woledge cox) ... 2 This was a capital race. The boats got well away together and travelled on even terms for some little distance. Just below the Tanrefy the Electric got foul of the weeds, whi<h gave the Tyne the advantage of a decided lead. Lanauze, on getting clear put on a fine spurt, and quickly commenced to decrease the distance between the boats. On reaching Pratt's it was a neck and neck race. After tairly rounding the corner and coming into the straight, Trischler's crew redoubled their efforts and with a game spurt drew away and held a lead of a couple of lengths just above the mile tree. Two hundred yards from home Lanauze's crew, stimulated by loud shouts from their backers, again spurted in fine style and rapidly drew on the leading boat, reaching the winning poßt just half a length behind the Tyne.
