CHRISTCHURCH. Tuesday, January 28. [Before Q-. L. Leo and C. K. Blakiston, Esq«,, J.P’s.] Drunk and Disorderly.—A first offender was fined ss. Forgery and Uttering.— Edgar Bastings, remanded from the 21st instant, was charged with forging and uttering a cheque for £7 5s on the Bank of New Zealand at Christchurch. On the application of the Inspector of Police, ho was further remanded for eight days, to bo brought up sooner if required.

LYTTELTON. Tuesday, January 2S. [Before W. Donald and H. Allwright, Eeqs.] Assault.— William Kemperton, a seaman on board the harquontine Ebenezer, was charged with striking the master of the vessel with his clenched fist. Captain Milne stated that he told the prisoner to go to work on Monday morning, when he received a blow from him cn the face. Witness’s face was slightly cut and discoloured. Prisoner contended that the master struck him first, in proof of which he called Gilbert Berry, an ordinary seaman on board the vessel, who stated that prisoner pushed the captain on one side ; didn’t see the captain strike prisoner, but did see the latter strike the captain. Sentenced to twelve weeks’ imprisonment with hard labour. Attempting to Desert. —George Smithy an able seaman belonging to the crew of the ship Mallowdale, from London, was charged with this offence. Captain Doman, master of the ship Mallowdale, said he found prisoner going off in the train to Christchurch on Monday night. Ho was attempting to desert. Prisoner staled that he had a general leavefrom the chief officer, and was going to see his friends in Christchurch, and would hayo returned to the ship on Wednesday morning. Policeman Montray testified to having arrested the prisoner. He was apparently concealing himself at the end of the platform. Bench ordered him to be sent on board.
