[PBB PBESB AGBNOT.] Auckland, January 27. Robert Grant, purser of the steamer Taupo, died suddenly this morning. The deceased was ont driving with Mr Garrard, chief officer, yesterday. On his return he became ill, and died suddenly at 3 a.m. Dr. Hooper believes that death resulted from sunstroke. Probably an inquest will be held to-day. The mail bag, &c., found on the beach near Point Chevalier, are believed to have been stolen between Auckland and Grahamstown. Enquiries are being instituted. A house in Mills’ Lane took fire last night. A woman named Ryan found asleep in bed, was enveloped in flames, and narrowly escaped with her life.

Wellington, January 27. Mr R. Grant, the purser of the Taupo, and formerly of the steamer Wakatipu, died at Manukau yesterday.

The schooner Rose of Eden struck a rock in Tory Channel yesterday, and became a complete wreck. All hands got ashore. About thirty tons of cargo,(owned by Mr John Compton, were insured for J 8450 between the South British, National, and Standard Insurance Companies. Dunedin, January 27. The total amount of cash received at the laying of the foundation stone of the Catholic Cathedral yesterday was, jCB2O, but promises of contributions were given for £, 1520 beyond this amount. Mr Varley has commenced his evangelistic services in Dunedin. Yesterday he had a large audience, and was accorded a hearty welcome. He intends to speak on behalf of Bible reading in public schools at a meet'ng to-night for the election of the Dunedin School Committee.

Illness of Lady Normanby.

Lady Normanby was taken seriously ill about five o’clock this morning, and two doctors have been in attendance. Her ladyship is now somewhat better.

Major Gordon, Inspector of Volunteers, who has, for a considerable time, been ill at Auckland, has now become so seriously ill as to cause grave anxiety amongst his friends as to his ultimate recovery.

Cargill totted up 83 in faultless style before the former lost his wicket, one miuuto before time was called. Ho made 51, while Cargill was not out 23. The game now stands one wicket for 83. Carisbrook requires 154 mors to win. On Cay-ford v Carruthers being called on this morning, Mr Denniston, the plamtiff’s counsel, intimated that the case had been settled out of Court, and read the following agreement:—‘'The defendant admits that his pleas are based on erroneous information and withdraws the same. He consents to the same being struck out, and judgment boing entered for the plaintiff £2OO without costs. Oamard, January 27.

There was some trouble yesterday, in getting the immigrants, per Taranaki, to the barracks. Many of them were drunk and fighting, and a general scrimmage took place. The barrackmaster and Sergeant Beatty received some hard knocks. One of the most conspicuous of the combatants was this morning sentenced to one month’s imprisonment for his riotous conduct.
