NEWS OF THE DAY.
Avon Road Board. —Tho nomination of candidates for throe vacancies on the Board took place to-day when Messrs Dickenson, Strouts, Neshor, Bligh, Philpot, Green,|Munro, and Cooper were nominated. The show of hands was in favour of Messrs Nesher, Bligh, and Munro, and a poll was demanded, which takes place to-day. Maddlk. Cuabbonnkt. This accomplished artiste will give her second and last concert this evening at the Oddfellows’ Hall. The talents of this young pianist should secure her a bumper house. Cricket. —A series of cup matches are being played in Dunedin. Tho telegram column will show the result of Saturday’s games.
Racing Sweeps. —Sweeps to the amount of nine thousand pounds are advertised on the Dunedin Cup in tho local papers.
Racers fob Wellington.— Mr Vallance took his four fine race horses, Laertes, Mufti, Lady Ellen, and Merlin with him to Wellington by the Hawea on Saturday night. The same steamer took away Mr Horsfall’s Ratcatcher and King Quail for the same destination.
Cobn Exchange. — A meeting of the eubBcribera to the Corn Exchange was held on Saturday at the rooms. It was resolved that the committee of management should consist of farmers only, and twenty one gentlemen were elected. A report of the proceedings appears elsewhere. Long Vacation. —The long vacation in connection with the Supremo Court commenced on Saturday, and will terminate on March 10th. His Honor will sit during vacation to dispose of some urgent applications.
Lyttelton School. —The committee of the Lyttelton school Held a meeting on Friday night, Mr H. R. Webb in the chair. For members of the Board of Education—Messrs A. Duncan and W. Montgomery were nominated. The annual report of the committee was read and adopted, and will be submitted to-night to the householders at the public meeting. Embezzling Public Moneys.—A charge of embezzling excess fares on the Oxford railway was preferred against P. J. Fowler in the Kaiapoi Court on Saturday. The case was remanded to Christchurch, where it will be heard on Wednesday next. A Runaway Hoese.—On Saturday afternoon a horse harnessed to a cart belonging to Jamos[Radcliffe, who lives atWoolston, bolted from Chester street east, round the Colombo street bridge, and was finally stopped in Cathedral square No injury was done, and the circumstance was purely accidental. Dhowntsd in the Rakata. —An inquest was held by Dr. Trevor at the Railway Hotel, Rakaia, on Saturday, on the body of George Smith Skae who was found drowned on January 23rd. It appeared that deceased had tried to cross the river on horseback on January 18th, a train being on the bridge at the time he wished to cross. The jury returned a verdict that deceased was found drowned, and added a rider expressing the opinion that the gatekeepers should bo instructed to warn people from crossing the river. Deceased leaves a wife and family.
Drapers’ and Clothiers’ Picnic.— This event takes place to-morrow, and should the weather _ prove favorable will no doubt prove a very enjoyable gathering. The arrangements made by tin committee are very complete, and a pleasant day may be anticipated,
