A Cooks!own telegram reports the total failure of the New Guinea expedition, whioli left Melbourne in August in the sehoouer Dove. No gold was found. The party was prostrated with fever, and four died. The remainder of the party were attacked by
natives in canoes, but escaped. Shortly after the schooner sprang a leak. The men were terribly reduced by disease. Finally they were taken to Yoikohama [by the British ship Launc«lot. Great Fire at Hone: Kong, January 24, At Hong Kong a fire reduced 368 houses into a mass of ruins. The gaol was only saved by the most strenuous exertions. The British Insurance Company suffers but little. The rapid spread of the fire is believed to be duo to incendiarism.
