[beutee’S telegrams to the press] AGENCY. Sydney, January 23. Arrived —Easby. News from Brisbane advises the total failure of the Melbourne expedition to Now Guinea. The whole party were prostrated by fever, and four died. News from Hongkong states that a disastrous fire occurred there. Ten acres and a half of buildings were destroyed, including the civil hospital and police barracks. The loss is estimated at £200,000. [special to press agency.] Melbourne, January 23. Arrived—Arawata, on Wednesday. Sailed—Rotorua, on Tuesday : and Claud Hamilton, on Thursday. Tenders are invited for the construction of the Melbourne exhibition buildings.

The Victorian expedition to New Q-uinea was decimated by disease, hardships, and conflicts with the natives. They were all sick and unable to work the ship or find a harbor. They, therefore, lay to for a fortnight and were eventually found. . The Bulli miners’ difficulty is likely to be .settled amicably.
