CHRISTCHURCH CHESS CLUB.

The annual meeting was hold last evening, at Warner’s Hotel, Mr J. Y. Colborne-Yeel in the chair.

The meeting proceeded to read the reports of committee, treasurer, and secretary, which wore all adopted. The election of officers for the ensuing year then took place. Mr Jacobson proposed that Mr Veel be reelected, saying that the interests of chess demanded his re-election.

Mr Hookham seconded, and said a more painstaking president could not be found. Carried unanimously. Mr Veel said he blushed to hear such laudatory remarks, knowing his deficiencies, but he would continue to give all his endeavours to the interests of the club.

Mr W. D. Wood was re-electod as vicepresident, and Mr McWilliams, treasurer. Mr Hookhara proposed Mr Albert Pinkstone as a fit and proper person to be secretary. Messrs Jones and Moore seconded, and the proposal was carried unanimously. Mr Pinkstone said the members might rely on his best endeavours to promote the wellbeing of the club. The following gentlemen were elected the committee for the ensuing year: —Messrs Jacobsen, Ilookham, Dr. Ellis, Messrs Mainwaring and Joseph. Mr Jacobson proposed a chess congress for New Zealand, and several members were elected as a special committee to carry the proposal into effect. Messrs Hay and Grinstead, of Dunedin, made a few remarks expressive of their cordiality towards the Christchurch Chess Club.

The meeting terminated with a vote of thanks to the outgoing officers and the chairman.
