T-H B e A N T E E B TJ R l r CRICKETING TOUR. CANTERBURY v. RICHMOND. BY SUBMARINE CABLE. [from our special correspondent.] ANOTHER VICTORY FOR CANTERBURY, Melbourne* January 18. The weather war* comfortably cool to-day, when the mnt;h again at Richmond was continued. The wicket to-day was a poor one, not playing by any means true. The bowling of the Victorian team was not nearly so good as sonic which the Canterbury men have had to withstand in their other ma'ehes. In the first innings of Canterbury yesterday’s score was increased by 112, chiefly by the fine playing of W. Frith, who ccntrJ.u.'.ted no less hi. The field.ng. ol Richmond was good all through. The Canterbury innings closed lor #23, or 28 ahead of their opponents. After a short) interval the elder Manion and Bury
took the wickets for Richmond, and both contributed double figures, being the only members of the team who did so in the second innings. The bowling of Ashby and C. Frith in this innings was steady and effective, being altogether too good to permit of quick scoring. The fielding also was good. The innings closed for 63. Canterbury had thus 36 to get to win, which they did with the loss of two wickets, Baker’s contribution being 26. This concluded the programme of Canterbury’s matches in Victoria, the result being that out of their six matches they have won three and lost three. The team will leave by the Rotorua on Tuesday, and will play a one day’s match at Hobart Town on their way. Appended are the scores in the match against Richmond : Richmond. First Innings. This match, which was commenced on the 11th inst., was continued on Saturday. Stevens and Conran, who had placed 12 and 17 runs to the credit of the Country, resumed their places at the wickets, to the bowling of Beard and Skelton, the latter of whom was allowed to play instead of J, Fowler, and was of great assistance to his side. Conran, by steady play, raised his score to 34 before he was caught by Jones, at long-on. No one else gave much trouble to the bowlers, and the innings closed for 160. After the usual interval, the Town went in for their second innings. Skelton and Wood were soon disposed of, but Secretan and B. Cotterill gave the field more trouble. The latter played a good innings for 41 runs, which included two fine leg hits for 5 and 4, and several very pretty cuts. H. Cotterill was in better form than he has shown this season before, and made 44 runs. When time was called Baker and Perceval were not out with 24 and 28 to their credit. The fielding of the Country eleven was very poor. An exception must be made in favour of Conran, who kept wicket really well. The catches which disposed of Secretan, Allen, and E. Cotterill were very sharply taken. The scores are as follows Country. First Innings. W. L. Rees, c and b Beard 35 A. C. Wilson, runout 28 E. Mitchell, h Board 1 G. A. Turner, b E. Cotterill ...20 E.
