NEWS OF THE DAY.
Colombo Road Wesleyan Church— The Rev. J. S. Smalley will conduct religious services to-morrow morning and evening. Sydenham Presbyterian Church. —The Revs. N. McCallum and W. Douglas will conduct the services in this church tomorrow. Friends of Labor Loan Society.— The first half-yearly meeting of this society will be held at the Market Hotel on Monday evening. East Belt Wesleyan Sunday School.— The anniversary services of this school will be held to-morrow, in the East Belt Church. On Tuesday a tea and public meeting will bo held. The Stewarts. —Another very large attendance was attracted to the Oddfellows’ Hall last evening when “If” was repeated with as much success as ever, and applause and encores wore loud and frequent. Tonight the Stewarts will make their last appearance but one. Those therefore who have not yet witnessed their unique and pleasing performance should not miss the opportunity of doing so. Concert. —Next Tuesday evening a grand concert will bo given at the Theatre Royal, under the auspices of Mr H. P. Towle. The programme arranged is of the most inviting character. Amongst other items will be the last act of “ Maritana.” The programme will also include the sestet from “ Lucia di Lammormoor.” Miss Amy Sherwin will repeat the great mad scene from the same opera. This, it will bo remembered, met with great approbation when Miss Sherwin recently gave her short series of concerts at the Oddfellows’s Hall. The musical portion of the entertainment will conclude with the last act of “ II Trovatore ” in character, the parts of Manrico and Leonora being sustained by Mr H. F. Towle and Miss Amy Sherwin. A most attractive feature of the entertainment will be a grand naval ballet, arranged by Signor Borzoni, for which a number of young ladies and gentlemen have been carefully trained. The music is by M. Carron, and is of a light sparkling description, appropriate to the ballet. 1.0.G.T, Last evening the Dauntless Lodge, I 0.G.T., gave a miscellaneous entertainment at the Good Templar Hall, consisting of songs, readings, addresses, and recitations. There was a very good attendance, and everything went off well. The chair was occupied by Brother Cameron. These entertainments will be given on the second Friday in every month. The Late Captain Hughes.— The example set by the friends of the late Captain Hughes who are at work in Dunedin endeavouring to raise a little money for Mrs Hughes and her eight small children, is being imitated by Captain Lancaster, of the barquentine Hopeful, at Lyttelton. Since Wednesday at noon he has collected £ls Is Id, which sum he has remitted to Mr H. Houghton, of the Dunedin committee, to be paid over to the widow. Captain Hughes, it will be recollected, was master of the steamer Star of the South until about a month ago, when he exchanged boats with the master of the Oreti, from whoso bridge ho accidentally fell and was drowned. Captain Powell, of the Especulador, is also interesting himself in behalf of Mrs Hughes, and has already upwards of £9 on his list. A.O.F.—The flfteeenth annual meeting of the Canterbury United District Lodge of the A.O.F. was held in the Foresters’ Hall on Thursday evening, when the following officers were present:—D.O.R. Bro. Ralph in the chair, D.S.C.R. Bro. Phipps, D.T. Bro, Crooks, D.S.B. Bro. Ness, D.B. Bro. Mummery. Delegates, 2309, P.O.R. Bros. A. Gapes and Williams; No, 2703, P.D.C.R. Wilcox and P.O.R. Bro, Warstall; No. 0031, secretary Bro. Bedford. The D.C.R. opened the court in due form. The auditors' reported that they had examined all the books and vouchers and found everything correct. The (secretary then read the balance sheet, which showed an increase of the fund to the extent of £l5O for the past year. P.O.R. Bro, T. Gaues, P.O.R. Bro. William, P.D.C.R. Bro. Willcox, and the D.S., were appointed a committee to revise the district by-laws. The Secretary reported that five members and three members’ wives had died during the past year. The following members were elected as district officers: —D.O.R,, Bro. Phipps; D S.C.R., Bro. M. Weastall ; D.T„ Bro. Crooks ; D.S., Bro. Ness. P.D.C.R. Bro. Ralph was presented with P.D.C.R. neck ribbon, and his name was ordered to bo placed on the respect board. The District agreed that, as soon as there was an increase ot Courts, they would give their support in holding district mootings otherwise than Christchurch and Lyttelton. P.D.C.R. Bro. Wilcox was appointed to confer with the committee appointed from Court 2309 in procuring a testimonial for P.O.R. Bro. Woodford for past services, as he was the founder of Forestry in New Zealand. Resolved—“ That the sum of £IOO beinves'ed in Mrßird’sMutual Building Society, when such sum is available.” Resolved— “ That the annual balance-sheets of Courts and District ho printed us heretofore.” Resolved—'“That a vote of thanks ha recorded on tlie minutes to the past officers for their services during the year.” Several accounts were passed for paymnt, , MASONIC.-At the regular monthly meeting of the Thistle Lodge, Ashburton, S.C., No. 627, hold on January 9th, Bro. St. Hid, 8 M,, on behalf of the brethren of the Thistle Lodge, presented P-M. Hem Shearman, of the Somerset Lodge with a jewel for assistance rendered to the lodge, and his kindness ard courtesy to the brethren. Bro. R. W. Shoirsou thanked the brethren for the present in a fow suitable words.
