WELLINGTON. [by TEXiEGEAPII. J Mackic, the bank clerk, was tried to-day for forgery and embezzlement. Ho pleaded “ Not Guilty,” but tho jury returned a verdict of “Guilty” on both charges. He will be sentenced to-morrow- His salary was .£175 per year, with an allowance of £SO per year, furnished rooms, and railway pass. At tho Supremo Court, in the case of Arthur L. Sweet, charged with forging a cheque, the jury, after a long absence disagreed, and at a late hour last night it being found that they still disagreed, refreshments were ordered for them, and they were locked up for tho night. On the Court being opened this morning, it was found they still disagreed, and they were discharged, and tho case ordered to bo again put on tho list. Charles Schmidt, for robbing Robert Cooper, at the Empire Hotel, was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment. The Chief Justice characterised the case as a very bad one, there being an entire absence of the usual inducement to robbery, inasmuch as prisoner was of temperate habits and with a considerable sum of money in the Government Savings’ Bank. The Judge ordered that the money found amongst prisoner’s personal effects, some £3O, should be given to prosecutor, but said that prisoner’s money in tho Savings’ Bank could not be touched. DUNEDIN. In the Supreme Court to-day Jane Reid was convicted of perjury, but sentence was reserved pending the decision of the Supreme Court on some legal points raised by tho prisoner’s counsel.
