CHRISTCHURCH. Tuksdav, January 7. [Before C. WHtefoord, Esq., R.M] Failing to Provide. Charles W. Thompkius appeared to answer a charge of neglecting 1o provide his wife and child with proper means of support. Mr R. D. Thomas appeared on behalf of the wife, and stated that the case, which had already been heard before Air Mcllish, had been postponed in order that some mutual arrangement might be come (o between the parties. In answer to the Bench, Mr Thomas said (hat. not only had no arrangement been arrived at, but the defendant had in the most positive wanner refused to contribute anything towards the support of his wife, who was entirely dependent upon her relatives for their maintenance. The defendant said hie solicitor, Mr O’Neill, was not present, and asked that the case might be postponed for a fw

minutes, that he might send for him. The Bench granted a few minutes’ delay, and on Mr O’Neill’s arrival the case was adjourned by mutual consent for twenty-four hours until the arrival of Mr Mellish.
