DRAINAGE BOARD.
A special meeting of the Board was held this morning, at which Messrs Tancrcd (chairman), Koss, and Duncan were present. The Chairman said that the meeting had been called for the consideration of the tenders for the formation of the Antigua storm water drainage sewer, and he thought the better plan would be for the Board to discuss the matter in committee. This was agreed to. Mr Duncan stud that before the Board went into committee he wished to say that the statement which was recently made in one of the newspapers to the effect that the Drainage Board were departing from Mr Clarke's scheme in making a brick sewer in the Ferry Koad, whereby the drainage from the houses would be taken down that sewer, was an erroneous one. If members would turn to page 18 in Mr Clark's report they would see that house drainage was to go into the drain down the Ferry road, and the only alteration which had been made was in increasing the size of the drain and doing away with Jackson's creek as a storm water channel, as it was found that the creek would have had to be deepened in some places 7ft., and even then have only a slight fall. The Board, through the _ Chairman, represented the proposed alteration to Mr Clark when that gentleman was in Wellington, and he entirely concurred in the proposed change. If no connections between the properties on the Ferry road and the drain were to be allowed, one of the main objects of the work would be done away with, i.e., the drying of the subsoil. In fact, the drainage of the subsoil throughout the whole drainage district is, perhaps, the main object in having the extension works carried out. The clause referred to in Mr Clark's report was " that the Ferry road would receive a 12in. pipe from Matheson's road to Bell's creek, to carry both the rain water and the house drainage from dwellings along the road, and the mouth of Bell's creek would be deepened to give this pipe the requisite fall." The Board then went into committee.
There were only two tenders sent in, and after some discussion, the Board having resumed, reported the passing of the following resolution :—" That both tenders be declined as too high, and that fresh ones be advertised for, to be sent in by 10 a.m. on or before Friday, the 17th inst." Mr Harman apologised for the unavoidable absence of Mr Hall as he had to attend a Road Board meeting; and Mr Duncan excused the absence of Mr Hobbs, who was compelled to be in attendance at the Supreme Court. A discussion took place on the representation of the engineer to the Board that it would be necessary to obtain an engine for working the pulsometer. The matter was left in the hands of the chairman and the engineer, and the Board adjourned.
