The strike is settled through the agency of Mr Lockhoai on the following terms : —All the men as far as practicable return to their , former positions. The Company to retain the services of one hundred and eighty Chinese, to bo reduced to one hundred and twenty within three months. The wages due to the men on the 18th November to be paid by the Company, and ships’ discharges given whore necessary. [from: our own CuRRHCPONDENT.] Dunedin, January 3. The Caledonian socleiy’s takings at the gates were—Tie first day, £451 ; second, ,£346. Tlie gross takings are expested to bo over =£lsoo. Five thousand persons travelled on the railway on New Year’s Day. Complaints a:o daily made of tho insufficient accommodation at tho main railway station, where trains are frequently delayed for want of room. Tho entire horse Bonnie Scotland, imported by James Walls of Canterbury, per Norval, died six weeks after the vessel left Loudon. The body of a Chinaman has been found in a creek called Allan’s Gully, near Waikaia. Ho is supposed to have been murdered by some of his countrymen. Henry Lion Metz has been committed for trial on two charges of forgery. Mr Ward has resigned the offices of Registrar of the Supreme Court and Sheriff, bio successor has yet been appointed. Leary was returned unopposed fer the High Ward. The first crushing of the Weatherstone’s cement, though not up to expectation, leaves a small margin of profit. Wellington, January 3. Some specimens of stone taken from the Golden Point mine, mar Fictoa, have on a rough test yielded equal to from six to thirtysix ounces of gold per ton. The richest stone was thrown away by the miners, as it did not show traces of gold. It was taken from what appeared to be a break in one of the reefs. Dr. Hector brought back with him specimens from Langdon’s reef, West Coast, which have yielded from two and a-half ounces on ordinary stone to thirty-two and sixty-nine ounces of gold to the ton, with a small quantity of silver. The Kangitoto silver mine tests give from four to five ounces of gold, about the same quantity silver, and five per cent, of zinc per ton. Notwithstanding the fact th ,t daring the last three years Wellington has nearly doubled in population, crime has decreased 33 per cent. The committals in 1876 were 616 ; in 1877, 527 ; last year, 430. The inmates cf the gaol are now only 3 per 1000 of the population. [PEE PBE33 AGENCY.] Wei lington, January 3. Amongst a number of vessels sighted by the Pleiades was the barque Clara, from Havanuah to Malmoun, which reported having lost master and live men from yellow fever. Mackie has been committed to take his trial on the charge of forgery. The prisoner reserved his defence. The charge of larceny is being heard. John Hill, who was some time ago committed to gaol for contempt in disobeying an order of the Supreme Court, will be released to-day, an order to that effect having been signed by the Chief Justice. A petition was presented on behalf of Hill, and the Chief Justice said under the circumstances he would impose no conditions, hut warned Hill that a repetition of his offence would inevitably entail a much heavier punishment than he had already experienced. Mackie, who was cl larged with embezzling £ 1300 from the Bank of New Zealand at the Upper Hutt, was brought up this morning before the Resident Magistrate. Mr Izard, Crown Prosecutor, assisted by Mr Buckley, solicitor, appeared for the Bank, and prosecuted. The charge for embezzlement was withdrawn, and one for forgery and another for larceny substituted. Mr Wood, late Chief Justice of Fiji, appeared for the prisoner. The case will occupy a considerable time. Napier, January 3. The total revenue collected at the Customs, Fort Ahuriri, for the quarter ending December 81st, was £9990 13s 31. Tho return of births, deaths, and marriages for the Napier district shows for the past year—Births, 443; nairiages.. 115 ; deaths, 224.
