CRICKET.

EAST v WEST. The first innings of this match was played on the Association Ground on New Year’s Day. The captain of the East won the toss, and sent in Allen and Longden to the bowling of H. Cottorill and Harman. Allen began with a good drive for 4 off Ootterill, and soon ran up 15 runs, when he was smartly taken at point. Jones, the next man, played a straight ball with his leg and made room for Stevens, who remained a long time at the wicket, but did not score so freely as usual. Longden, who played well for his runs, was dismissed when the score had reached 41. Rowe made 53 in a very short space of time, in a style which can be admired only when it is successful. He and Stevens brought up the score to 118, when an adjournment was made for lunch. When play was resumed both batsmen were bowled without any increase of the score, Rowe by a yorker from Percival and Stevens by a good length ball from Ootterill. The innings terminated for 145. At halfpast three the East went into the field, Rowe and Longden commencing the bowling. Runs came slowly at first, four wickets falling for 47, of which Harman made 12. When Secretan and Mathias got together, the game became livelier, both batsmen scoring fast. Mathias was bowled when the score was 98. His score was obtained chiefly by leg hitting, and comprised three 4’s, a 3, and two 2’s. Secretan and 0. Conran raised the total to 119, when the 'former was well caught by Harman, who was fielding deep long-on. Among his hits were three fine drives off Rowe, for which he scored a 5 and two 4’a. Percival was bowled without scoring, and Horwood joined Conran, who commenced his innings with a fine drive for 5. At this period of the game the bowling had become very loose and both batsmen treated it as it deserved. In a little over an hour they brought up the score from 119 to 239, at which point Horwood was bowled. He played well, and, had his hits been run out, his score would have been double what it is. It includes a 5 and three 4’s. Conran’s 107 was a merry innings. He hit hard to all parts of the field, but most of Ids runs were obtained by drives, many of which were good clean hits. His score, w r hich is the largest made on the ground this season, is composed of one 5, eleven 4’s, seven 3’b, ten 2’s, and seventeen singles. He gave a chance at the wicket early m his innings, and another to long field off, when he had scored about 80. The inniugs concluded at six o’clock for 251 runs. The following is the score : East.
