LYTTELTON SHORE SPORTS.

The shore sports at Lyttelton yesterday, under the direction of: Messrs Sowdon, Smith, Cullen, Thornley, Graham, and Mr J. Fletcher the hon. secretary, were well attended, and caused a considerable amount of amusement. The various events were ably contested, and more valuable prizes could not possibly have caused keener competition. The particulars of the different events, with the names of the winners, are as follows: Quoits, 18 yds, 71b. quoits. Ist prize, 40b; 2nd, 20s; 3rd, 10s. Entrance fee, 2s 6d.

Taylor, who went np the slippery mast evidently quite at home at the w'ork. For the Lyttelton men’s race round a block, the gold fossick, the single men’s race round block, and the old ladies’ race, there were no entries. Old Men’s Race, over 50, 100 yds. Ist prize, sheep; 2nd, 10s. Stewart 1 Hawthnn 2 Seven jolly old gents entered, and had a splendid tussle for it. The aggregate of the entries and contributions to the land sports -were a trifle in excess of the same from this source last year. Five pounds worth of New Year’s gifts wore distributed at the committee rooms to the little folks. The committee merit thanks for the courtesies extended to the press representatives.
