[BY SUBMAEINE CABLE.] [special to "globe."J THE CanterkiryCricketers AT BALLARAT. CANTEEBUEY WTNS BY EIGHT WICKETS. Second Day. Ballabat, December 28. Play was resumed this morning, the effect of the night's rest being apparent in the improved fielding of the Canterbury team. W. Figgis, Nettle, and Williamson all played excellent innings, and by their contributions the defeat of tho Australian team in one innings was averted. The second innings of the Ballarat men closed for a total of 135. Canterbury had thus 47 to get to win, which was easily accomplished with the loss of only two wickets. Ashby hit the bowling to all parts of the field, and his score reached 32 when game was called. Tho following are the continuation of the scores:—
ELEVEN v. EIGHTEEN. A match was commenced on Saturday between an eleven chosen from those players who have represented their province and eighteen other members of the Association. At about three o'clock Wood and Wilson for tho Eleven were sent in to the bowling of Turner and Peter, but before a run was made, Wood, in attempting a cut, hit the ball into his wickets. Wdson and J. Fowler brought up the score to 71 before they were separated. Fowler's score, which was obtained chiefly by leg hitting, was composed of 2 fours, 5 threes, 3 twos, and singles. Wilson played steadily, as is his wont, and was not disposed of till tho scoro had reached 88, of which he contributed 29, a five and a four to leg being his principal efforts. Stevens played well for his runs, which included two good leg hits for five and four. Allen and Fairhurst raised the score to 128, and after two more runs had been added, tho innings was ended by a brilliant catch made by E. Williams at long on. Of the seven bowlers who were tried in the innings, Thompson was the most successful. He was put on when Fowler and Wilson were well set, and bowled them both. Four of tho wides scored against him were from one ball which passed the long slop and reached the fence. Turner bowled straight, but ho has the very general fault of pitching his balls too short. The wickets he clean bowled were got by balls pitched well up. At six o'clock the Eleven went into the field, and when time was called they had takeu two wickets at a cost of 35 runs, of which Turner and Morice made 20 and 10 respectively. The following is tho score : THE ELEVEN.
