WATER SUPPLY COMMITTEE.

A meeting of the water supply committee was held at tho City Council yesterday morning. Present—Crs, Cass (chairman), Gapes, Ayers, and Wilson. Some discussion took place on tho question of the artesian water. Or. Gapes, after some discussion, intimated his intention at the next meeting of submitting the following series of and recommendations : having considered the several plans for a general water supply for the city of Christchurch, are of opinion that neither of them give sufficient information or data by which to recommend a general scheme to be commenced. The committee are fully alive to the groat necessity for a supply for sanitary purposes, viz., flushing channels, &c, for extinguishing fires and watering streets. They would therefore recommend that_ a pair of stationary steam-engines of sufficient power bo placed at the river Avon, with a head pipe laid from the North belt along Park terrace, thence up the Lincoln road to the South belt, with branch pipes along each street, the north and south belts included, to the east belt, such pipes to be of sufficient size and strength, and laid in such manner as to be suitable for an extended general waterworks scheme, and that plugs be placed at the junction of every street and other places where required for the purpose of fixing the hose for extinguishing fires in any part of the block’; also for flushing channels and watering streets. The committee would respectfully remind the citizens that a sufficient supply of pure water can be obtained in any part of tho city from the artesian source by means of pipes being sunk to the pump attached thereto.” The surveyor gave an approximate estimate of the cost of the above at £27,000. After a short discussion, the meeting adjourned until Monday next. '
