J. Marks, Clerk of the Course—Mr Sam. Morrin. The Auckland races were largely attended yesterday. Every event was well contested, and the weather fine with the exception of a few slight showers. After two unsuccessful attempts a capital start was effected, and resulted in one of the best races ever witnessed on the course. Walter’s colt led from the starting post, Izaak Walton following, with Pinfire third and Xantippe last. This order was retained through the cutting and into the straight to the dip, when Pinfire came with a tremendous rush, winning cleverly on the post. Time — Imin. 19secs.

Auckland Cun, handicap, of 300 sovs, added to a sweepstakes of 15 sovs each; second horse to receive 30 sovs out of stakes. Distance, two miles and a quarter. A. McDonald’s b h Ariel, Sat 131 b (P. Betting - 6 to 4 against Ariel, 3 to 1 against Punga, Elsa, and Q-illie Callum, 4 to 1 against Lady Elizabeth, and 5 to 1 against The Don. The horses got away to a splendid start, and passing the stand were all in a cluster, Punga was the first to lead, followed by Lady Elizabeth, Ariel third. In this order the grand stand was passed the second time round. Outside the cutting Ariel took the lend from Punga, Lady Elizabeth being second, but bolting shortly afterwards was out of it, Howe now brought Q-illio Callum up closely, but Mathews, however, rattled along on Ariel, keeping the lead past the post, and winning comfortably by two lengths. Q-illie Callum second, a good length ahead of The Don, Purga, Lady Elizabeth, Elsa, and Omega following home in order named. Time, 21sccs.
