MAGISTRATES’ COURTS.
CHRISTCHURCH. Monday, December 23. ("Before G. L. Leo and F. Hobbs, Esqs., J.P.’s.] Drunk and Disorderly.— Henry Parker was fined ss. Ellen Boyle and James Myles, just out of gaol, wore each fined in the same amount. Disobeying a Summons.— William Lambert was brought up charged with disobeying a summons to appear at the Resident Magistrate’s Court, Amherley, as a witness, on December 19th. At the request of Mr Inspector Hickson he was remanded to Addington gaol until January 2nd, to bo brought up at Amherley. Yaorancy.— Eohert Eversau was charged, under the Yagrant Act, with soliciting alms in a public place. From the evidence of a witness it appeared to be a. case of attempting to obtain money by violence and intimidation rather than one of soliciting alms. The witness said that ho and two friends were taking a walk on Sunday evening, when they were followed by the prisoner, who saidho “wanted their money. Ho was acting drunk, and was determined to have money that evening if he broke into the Bmk of New Zealand for it.” Prisoner seized one of the witness’ friends and struggled with him, and the latter had some difficulty in shaking him off. Information was then given to the police, and the prisoner was subsequenty arrested. At the request of Mr Inspector Hickson, he was remanded until the 27th instant.
Indecent Exposure.— Eugene McLaren, alias Hugh McLenan, alias Knock, was charged with wilfully and indecently exposing his person in a public place on December 22nd. None of the witnesses appearing, the prisoner was remanded for twentyfour hours, in order that they might be subpoenaed.
LYTTELTON. Monday, December 23. (Before W. Donald, Esq., R.M.) Feigning Sickness. —A. Anderson, an A.B. belonging to the brig Emperor, was charged by Captain Cleary with refusing to work. Accused hud left the ship for medical attendance, but as his physician certified that he was in perfect health, his Worship gave him the alternative of returning to the brig, or seven days’ gaol, with hard labor, which latter course prisoner accepted.
