WATER SUPPLY FOR CHRISTCHURCH.

At tho recont meeting of the water supply committee, a paper was read describing tho Sandusky Waterworks, tho arrangement of which is, it is said, superior to tho " Holly " system, of which mention has already been mado. Tho following ia a brief resume of the description, giving the main points of the scheme :

The influent pipe, 1800 ft. in length from the pump to the bay crib, as now laid, is of wrought iron plate formed into a cylinder of 3ft. diameter. After preparing (lie trench by dredging, submarine blasting, &0., the pipe was lloated to place in lengths of some flOft., and lowered into trench by the aid of scowa, chains, &c. The joints wero made by iivc.tl.ing a half-sleeve on the end of each section, with flanges for hoita. with which the final connections, wcto made. By the use of cement in these sleeve connections good joints were secured, the whole pipe being submerged from lOf'fc. to 12('t., and not subject to pressure minor leaks would bo but. temporary and of no practical moment. The arrangement of scows, rigging, placing the pice in twncb, making joints, &c, were under the immediate charge of Captain Cfeorge 11. Breymann, submarine diver, whose peculiar qualifications for such work rendered his services valuable and the work unexpectedly easy.
