A new Italian Ministry has been formed under the presidency of Depretio. Bombay, December 18. An official despatch from General Brown states that he is marching upon Jellalabad* which ho will occupy on December 20th. AUSTRALIA. [special xo "globe.”] Sydney, December 20. Sir H. Parkes and Robertson have coalesced to form a Ministry, as it is yet incomplete. The Marquis of Normanby telegraphs to arrive in Melbourne on the 23rd February. NEW ZEALAND TELEGRAMS. [PEE PBBBB AGENCY.] Dunedin, December 20. Father O’Malley, S. J , last evening delivered a lecture here on “ The Catacombs of Rome.” Negotiations have been entered into between the new Portobello Tramway Company and the Ocean Beach Railway Company, with a view to amalgamation. The line belonging to the latter is being valued by Messrs Blair and Higginson, and a meeting will shortly be held to consider the matter. Wellington, December 20. The Native Minister goes North to-day. The Government have informed the Chamber of Commerce that they cannot give a definite reply regarding the railway station site until the Minister of Public Works returns to Wellington. New Plymouth, December 20. The Stella arrived last night with the Jackson Bay settlers. They are chiefly foreigners and can speak hut little English. The few English families amongst them will find immediate employment.

There is a romantic story afloat that a man named Chase, a relative of Secretary _ Chase, statesmen of America, left his home in New Bedford several years ago for California in a whaling ship to meet his brother, and was induced by Captain Lewis, of the vessel, not to land in San Francisco, but go on a whaling voyage. He came to New Zealand, and bolted on arrival here from the ship, owing to ill-treat-ment. Eventually he took up his residence in Hawke’s Bay, and married a Maori woman, by whom he has had several children. He sank to the position of Maori pakeha, and has on several occasions when visiting town made his bow to the Kesideut Magistrate. Nevertheless he was known to possess great influence among the natives, and on many occasions the late Native Minister, who recognised his posiiion, consulted him on various matters. During the American war his only brother in America amassed a very largo fortune, and became a millionaire. He died recently, and has left the whole of his property valued at over a million sterling to his brother in New Zealand. The recipient of this immense fortune does not purpose to _ leave the colony, but obtain a large farm fot- himself and family to settle upon. Since it has become known the story is a truthful one, and he can now obtain money and don the garb of a gentleman, his friends even iu Hawke’s Bay have become numerous. His Native wife is, however, suspicious of the kind intentions of his new found friends, and shepherds him most affectionately. Takamoaua, the member for East Coast Native district, is dangerously ill. His medical advisers fear unless great care is taken he will not recover.
It is proposed that a banquet be given to the retiring Mayor, Mr Stuart, in acknowledgement of services rendered by him during the past four years. Wellington, December 20. _ There is another of the Hermiono’s immigrants dying, and two more are not expected to recover No fresh cases. The health officer has just returned from the quarantine station. The ship is expected to be admitted to pratique nest week.
Dunedin, December 20
By the fire at Port Chalmers last night, which destroyed a shop and dwelling of Thomas Bridges, in George street, the Victorian office loses ,£175 on the stock, and New Zealand £2OO on the building.
