The New Zealand Shipping Company’s liner Waitangi, a handsome iron ship of 1128 tons, cleared at the customs yesterday afternoon, and took her departure for London. It is hut two months and four days since the Waitangi came into Sort, and but fifty working days were occupied in ischarging her inward freight and loading her with her present full cargo. She seems to he in fine trim for making a fast passage home, and as the “ Crusader ” follows close upon her heels, it is fair to presume that Captain Hodder will strain as many points to keep ahead as the Crusader will to overtake him. She carries six saloon and eight steerage passengers, and the following valuable cargo:— Value. 4860 bales wool £97,200 1365 sacks wheat P 365 435 „ flour 520 59 casks tallow 826 1 case sundries 10 Total £99,921 She was towed to sea by the P.S. Titan last night on the arrival of the 7.45 train. The chairman of directors and the general manager went off to the ship at 8.30 last evening, and at 9.30 p.m. the Titan took the ship in tow, favored by a breeze from the S.E. The excellent order in which the ship left the port called for a considerable amount of admiration. She cleared the heads at 10.15, and at 10.45 the tug left her with a good fair breeze, so that she would clear the land about midnght. Her passage may therefore be counted from December 20th. On the officials and others leaving the ship in the launch, several hearty cheers were exchanged between those in the ship and those in the launch, and if good wishes can hasten her arrival home, the Waitangi should indeed make a rapid passage.
