NEWS OF THE DAY.
Toech light Peocession.—The members of the Fire Brigades will assemble at the Cashel street Bridge at 8 30, to take part in the torchlight procession this evening. Fiee Brigade Delegates.—The meeting of delegates of Fire Brigades, which was fixed for 10 a.m. to-morrow, has been postponed until 7 p m., in order io give visitors an opportunity of seeing the city. Fatal Accident on the Railway.— Particulars of a fatal accident which occurred at the Awamoko Junction station, on Saturday night, to a woman named Mrs Maloncy, are given in this morning's telegrams. Gibls' High School.—We have been requested to correct an error in the prize list supplied to our reporter and published in Saturday's paper. In the 4th class, lor Edith Munnings read Edith Manning. Bubnham Industeial School. —It will bo seen by the telegram cl our Dunedin correspondent, that the successor of the late Mr Colee, in the charge of the Burnham Industrial School, has been appointed. District Couet.—lt is intimated in this morning's telegrams that the duys upon which the long talked of District Court will sit at Christchurch and AsLburton have at length been determined and are published in the " Gazette." Cantebbuby Yeomanby Cavaley.—The inspection of the Bangiora contingent was held on Thursday evening by Lieut. Slater. The band and several members from Christchurch were assembled at the station, and the company having passed inspection, sat down to an excellent spread at Mr Moody's Red Lion Hotel. Almanacs. —We have received copies of Tombs' Sixpenny and the Pbess .Shilling almanacs. It is unnecessary to give a detailed notice of these very useful publications, as they have already established themselves by their former issues, and it is sufficient to say that the editions for 1879 are in all respects equal and in some superior to those of former years. St. Maey's, Meeivale.—The last of a series of lectures in aid of the Sunday school f uuds was given on Friday night, by Mr 11. Selwyn Smith, on the subject of the " Brain, and its functions." The subject was bandied in a very lucid and interesting manner. A very hearty vote of thanks was given to the lecturer, and general regret was expressed that the lecture was so short. The Late Sudden Death.—With reference to the sudden death of Mr Sheppard, a late arrival by the Mallowdale, at the White Hart Hotel, on Saturday morning, it appears that the deceased, who is from Ireland and well connected, was seen the preceding evening by Dr. Townend. On examination the deceased was found to bo in the last stage of consumption, which Dr. Townend will certify as the cause of death. Consequently there will be no necessity for an inquest being held. Benefit Concebt. —The entertainment in aid of Mrs John Hancock and family took place at the Colonists' Hall, Lyttelton, on Friday night. The hall was densely packed, and the audience manifested its appreciation of the amateur talent at the Port by frequent bursts of applause. His Worship the Mayor presided, and announced that the gentlemen who got up the concert would have the pleasure of presenting Mrs Hancock with a handsome sum as the net proceeds of the affair. He took the opportunity also to thank the citizens for their liberal response, and the performers for their kindness in providing such a pleasant entertainment. Fiee Beigade Church Paeade. —ln accordance with announcement, the members of the various fire brigades yesterday had a church parade. The brigades attending were those belonging to Dunedin, Mornington, Port; Chalmers, Waimate, Timaru, Lyttelton, aud Christchurch. The whole of the men assembled at the Lichfield street station at halfpast ten and marched two deep to St. Paul's Presbyterian Church. The pulpit was occupied by the Rev. J. Elmslie, who preached an impressive sermon from John iii., verse 16, the Lessons being Psalms 103 and I. Corinthians, chapter i. The church was crowded. The visitors from the South arrived by the 6.20 train on Saturday evening.
