[PEB PEBBS AGENCY.] Auckland, December 14. The Theatre Royal bad a narrow escape last midnight. A fire broke ont in the shop occupied by Hogg, tobacconist and fruiterer. It was discovered by smoke issuing through the shutters. The fire brigade promptly arrived, and by strong force of water extinguished it. The damage is about fifty pounds. Another incipient fire in the Auckland Timber Company’s mill, at three this morning, was put out by a few buckets of w iter. Invercargill, December 14. The twelfth annual show of the Southland Agricultural and Pastoral Society was largely attended. The weather was fine. The entries were not so numerous in the live stock classes. There was a large accession in agricultural implements, &c. In the class of draught horses there were seven exhibits. The first prize went to Young Prince of Wales, owned by the Prince of Wales Company. The best thoroughbred entire of any age ; Ist, Bastian’s Vermicelli. Best shorthorn bull; Ist, Boreas ; owners, Connell and Knight. Sheep, merino, best ram, 4-tooth or over; W. B. Kingswell, Best pen of three; A. W. Johnston, Lincoln, Best 4-tooth and over; F. Sutton.

The “ Otago Daily Times ” states that Government have arranged with Mr Coster, the chairman of the New Zealand Shipping Company, to despatch a steamer from London to the colony in January, which is to call at several ports, with not less tnan 600 immigrants, mainly agricultural laborers, for Canterbury. The immigrants are receiving ready engagement. The demand for domestics is as great as ever. By an accident in the Nugget mine at Skipper’s, Thos. Cummins was killed and bis mate seriously injured.
