NEW ZEALAND TELEGRAMS. [FEB PBESS AGENCY.] Wellington, December 11. A meeting convened by the Mayor will shortly be held for considering the question of the introduction of Chinese into the colony. The Hon. J. Shoehan is expected at Wellington in a few days, and the Hon. Kobert Stout will be back from the South about Christmas. Further changes are about to be made in the police. Sergeant Smith will be transferred to Dunedin, this is said to be in consequence of some unpleasantness between Detective Farrell and the rest of the police, who are scarcely upon speaking terms. Attention having been drawn to the matter in Court and in the newspapers, the Government commenced an inquiry into the cause yesterday. The proceedings, however, are kept private. The " New Zealand Times " ventures to think Mr Wood, of Mataura, will get into a difficulty by accepting a nomination to the Legislative Council twelve months not having elapßed after he has ceased to be a member of the House of Representatives. Hi 3 call will shortly be gazetted. Amongst other vessels sighted by the Otaki was the ship Hurunui, bound to Lyttelton. She also sighted on the 3rd a barque steering for New Zealand, which may be the Corina, from London, now overdue. Tattranca, December 11. A numerous and iufluentiaily signed address was presented to Captain Malcolm on his leaving per Wanaka for the South this morning. [fbom OTTR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Wellington, December 11. The Governor in Council refused to confirm the decision of the Court of Enquiry into the recent accident to the Taupo. The return of their certificates to Captain Andrews and his chief officer has been ordered. The "Post" states that the Government have decided to take action next session to stop the threatened influx of Chinese. They do not contemplate imposing a poll tax, recognising the utterly useless character of such a measure, for the tiix could never be collected, but their prouosals will probably take the shape of a heavy tax upon the captain of any vest el bringing Chinese to the colony, except under certain conditions.
