THE AFGHAN WAR
The following telegrams supply somewhat fuller information respecting the curlier eperations in Afghanistan than has yet b3cn published : The British troops having crossed the frontier boundary of Afghanistan, pushed forward rapidly up the Khyber I'is towards AH Musjid, the heights approaching which were occupied by some ot the forces of tho Ameer. Precautions however had beer, taken by the General commanding the British and friendly native troops to prevent surprise, by sending forward strong parlies armed with breechloading rides, which told with great effect, ns the rocky eminences were boou abandoned by the-enemy, and the approach to the fortres cleared of all obstruction. As soon as the British Biege guns were brought vip and placed in position, a heavy fir® wai opened on tho
fortress, which replied with spirit. The cannonade was sustained without cessation for several hours, when the enemy's lire slackened, and at last his guns were silenced. When it was found that the garrison could not return the fire of the English, arrangements were made for an assault on the fortress. Tho Afghan soldiers seemed thoroughly disorganised, and after littlo more than a mere show of resistance surrendered.
