The Aiimmemn eouunittce has resolved to remit the question of opening the reading rooms of the Atliemcum ou Sundays to a general meeting, to be called in a w. ek or two. An unusual storm of thunder and lightning passed over the city last night. It has been decided to run cars in single stages

from one end of the city to the other, doing away with the present shart stages. The police yesterday served a summons on George Wood, of VVai-nui-o mata, calling upon him to answer on Friday next for having committed a breach of the Lunatics Act, 1808 Several fatal ca es of diphtheria are reported from the Wairar >pa district. The election for the Mayoralty culminated in the keenest election coi test ever known here. There was oidy one polling place, with an o dinary door for entrance. A large crowd collected outside all the mo ning, each voter having to wait his turn, which took some considerable time in consequence of the block at the door. Nelson, November 27. One of the heaviest rainfalls known for some time occurred here la t night. It commenced about 8.80, lasting till live this morning. It was accompanied by very heavy thunder and very vivid lightning, but with comparatively little wind. Dunedin, November 27. At a meeting of the directors of the Waimea Plains Railway Company yestcrdiy, it was decided to call for tenders for the construction of that line. The Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s show is largely attended to-day. The mayoral elections for the city and suburbs are taking place to-day, and much interest is taken in the proceedings.
