SYDENHAM BOROUGH COUNCIL.
Monday, November 25, The usual lort,nightly meeting of the Sydenham Borough Council was held last night at seven o’clock. Present—His Worship the Mayor and Crs. White, Jones, Pavitt, Charters, Hall, Langdown, Brown, and‘Foster.
The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed.
The Mayor said, since the last meeting, I have had one or two interviews with Mr Madham, secretary to Mr Conyers, on the question of ejecting a compromise with the Government respecting the disputed road north of railway, between Windmill road and Selvvyn street, and on Thursday morning last we mot a few of the directors of the Farmers’ Company on the ground. The result is, I would recommend the Council to offer the following compromise That, in consideration of the Council waiving the right of the public to the present road, the Government (o cive another forty feet wide, running from Windmill road to present cross road at west end of section. This offer to be without prejudice as to the question in dispute now pending. A letter was read from the Heathcoto Road Board, stating that at present they have no intention of proceeding with the lowering of Wilson’s road for the present. A letter was received from the secretary of (he Rakaia and Ashburton Forks Railway Company, enclosing a tracing of the land proposed to be taker, for the purposes of that line, and requesting the Council to tend in their claim for compensation in the form required in part 3 of the Public Works Act, 1876. The amount of land required to be taken is sccfion 30493, containing one acre. Referred to the former committee. langdown’s siding. A protest was road from certain ratepayers of Sydenham against granting a siding in Second street to Messrs Langdown and Co., on the ground that the erection of machinery, &c,, which would follow, would depreciate and possibly injure their property. WORKS COMMITTEE REPORT. The comm ttcc reported as follows : —Your committee have to report that the work of scavenging diroughout the Borough has been attended to during the past fortnight, and the fence on Colombo road, at the start of the Third street drain, removed. Broken Metal.—lt was resolved not to accept any tender for broken metal until the precise locality and amount required could he specified. Supplies. —The tenders of Me. srs Montgomery and Co. have been accepted for timber and cement. The cottage at the rear of the Board olhcc has been re-let, the rent to be paid monthly. Langdown’s Sluing.—Your committee recommend that Messrs W. Langdown and Co. he granted permission to continue their railway siding across Second street east, under a foe for the current year of £lO 10s, and in pursuance of the usual conditions. Streets in North-east Corner.—Your committee are of opini n that tho streets in the north cast corner of this Borough have not been dedicated. No deputation of the residents attended tho last meeting of the works committee as requested. Map of Borough.—Your committee bog to rcfc l - this matter back to the Council. Tho clauses were considered seriatim and confirmed, with tho exception of tho last. Tho report as a whole was adopt ed, and tho Council went into committee re the borough map. On resuming, the following resolution, moved by Cr. Charters, and seconded by Cr. Hall and carried, was reported to tho Council—“ That the tender of Messrs Dobson and Son be accepted, subject to the signing of the agreement and specification.” FINANCE, The finance committee reported that the receipts for tho past fortnight amounted to £242 16s 2d, and the expenditure for the same period £33 16s Id, leaving a Cr. balance at the Bank of £2177 10s 9d. The report was adopted, SANITARY REPORT. Before reading the report, Cr. Pavitt road a Utter ho had received from Mr A. P. Sheath, drawing the attention of the Council to the disgraceful state of the neighborhood of Wilson’s bridge, which was used as a receptacle for depositing waste refuse and rubbish of all kinds, which was both offensive and deleterious to health. Referred to the sanitary committee. WAIMATE RELIEF FUND.
The Mayor brought under the notice of the Council that subscriptions were being received by the town clerk of Christchurch for the relief of the sufferers by the late fire at Wairuate, and suggested that similar steps should be taken to augment the fund in the borough of Sydenham, It was resolved that the Sydenham Borough Council should subscribe a sum of money, collected privately amongst themselves, and that the burgesses bo invited by advertisement to give subscriptions likewise in aid of the sufferers by the fire. The Mayor said he had one or two more words to say, and it was on a custom that obtained in the old country which he would like to see adopted in the colony. It was tho custom for the Mayor elect to invite the members of the Council to accompany him to Divine service on the third Sunday after his election, and at tho termination of the religious ceremony to have a subscription, to bo devoted to any charity previously agreed upon.
A discussion took place on the point, and the Council as a body were in favour of carrying out his Worship’s suggestion. He staled that he was in the habit of worshipping at the United Methodist Free Church, Addington, and he should be glad of the members of the Council would accompany him to that place of worship, with the object in view that he had mentioned, on the morning or evening of Sunday, December 22nd, which would be the third Sabbath alter bis election.
Cr. Brown then moved, and Cr. Charters seconded, and it was agreed to —“ That tho members of tho Council attend in a body at a religious service to be held in the Free Methodist Church, Selwyn street, on the evening of Sunday, tho 22nd December, tho collection to be in aid of the poor of the Borough of Sydenham.” THE DISPUTED HOAD. The matters referred to in connection with tho disputed road north of the railway, between the Windmill road and Selwyn street, and which formed the subject of his Worship’s opening remarks, were then considered, and Cr. Charters moved, and Cr. Brown seconded—" That tho Mayor’s report to road along north side of railway bo adopted, and that the clerk communicate tho same to the Government. The motion was then put, and Crs. Brown, Pavitt, Charters, Hall, and Langdown voted in favor of it, and Crs. Jones and White against it. The motion was therefore carried. After the transact ion of other business of a general character, tho Council ad journed.
