Vicar-General Fynes was celebrant, and Father Hennebery preached to a crowded audience. There are to be three services daily tor three weeks, commencing at 5 a.m. Wellington, November 23. Yesterday afternoon a telegram was received by the police, stating that a man had cut his throat at Silverstream. The unfortunate man was brought into town later in the aftern on, and lodged in the hospital, where he died this morning. It appears that his name is George Coles, and that he was formerly a miner down South. He stated that he quarrelled wiih his friends at Christchurch, and that made him take to drink. He recently came np to Wellington, and there continued drinking until all his money was spent. The report of Hale, the inspector appointed by the Governor to report on the tramway, is unfavorable to the use of steam. He refuses to issue a certificate in consequence of the carriages and engines being eight inches wider than allowed by the Tramways Act. Dunedin, November 23. Switzers has sent down by escort 1010 ounces as the result of seven week s’lwashing. The rails on the Clinton section are within two and a half miles of the Government section south of Balclutha. The Government is endeavouring to arrange for the through opening early in January next.
