BOARD OF EDUCATION.
Thursday, November 21. The ordinary meeting of the Board was held at the Normal School at three o’clock. Present —?.lessrs W. Montgomery (in the chair), Webb, Saunders, E. C. J. Stevens, H. J. Tancred. and the Rev. C. Fraser. ABSENCE OF THE CHAIRMAN. A letter was read from Mr John Inglis apologising for hia absence on the ground of indisposition. MR DUNCAN. A letter was also read from Mr Andrew Duncan, stating that his absence was due to his being at the O unaru show as a judge. BUSINESS DONE BY THE CHAIRMAN. The business transacted by the chairman since the last meeting was approved. teachers’ classification. The following letter was read : Education Department, Wellington, 9th November, 1878. To the Pecretury Board of Education, Christchurch. Sir, — A ith reference to the regulations of 21th September for the examination, classilica tion, and certificates of teachers, 1 a n directed by the Minister of Education to inform you that whatever reasonable claims to exemption from examination in science are i nvolved in teachers’ replies to the circulars of the InspectorGeneral, dated April last, will he re considered in a liberal sense before teachers arc advi-e 1 what classification is to be granted in each case, and that on their receiving advice on that point an opportunity will occur for them to put in auy fresh claims, which will also receive full consideration. E. 0. Qibbes, pro Secretary. HE COHTS. Several reports were laid upon the (able. One was from Mr C. C. Howard, of the Normal School. It suggested that the schools break up on the 13th of December instead of on the 20th ; also meeting, after the holidays, a week earlier than heretofore. The Board decided to accede to the recommendation, and granted a sum of money lor the usual prizes. In his report the principal stated that ho had received a letter from the Cqat, asking him to go up ancj make the prize examination. The Board decided not to allow him, as it would tend to bring the principal in collision with the inspector. COMMITTEE. The Board then went into committee, and proceeded to deal with a number of matters of detail. On resuming, the following business was transacted. GAINSBOROUGH. The Board sanctioned the purchase of an additional two acres of laud at this place lor school purpose;;. ukbbib’s valley. The Board agreed to certain additions and improvements to the master’s house and school at this place, the cost to be about £IBO. The secretary was instructed to call for tenders. INCIDENTALS. It was resolved to forward a circular to the various schools in the d'strict, asking them to forward an estimate of the incidental expenses for the current twelve months. The Board again went into committee, and after tho transaction of some further business, adjourned at half-past 5 o’clock.
