Gazelle, which left here for Melbourne, tinder canvas, some time ago, returned through Stress of weather this morning. The Emerald, ketch, sailed for Wellington this morning. The Jessie Niccol, now at Dunedin, proceeds to the Bluff to load timber for Lyttelton. The s.s. St. Kilda, Captain Flowerday, took aboard one of the most valuable cargoes of stock ever shipped at Lyttelton yesterday, being prize animals purchased at the recent sales for Wanganui stock owners. She sailed for Wanganui direct last night. The Union Co.'s s.s. Taupo arrived at 12.30 p.m. yesterday. She has completely changed her officers. Capt.iin Crottarty being in command, Captain Garrard, chief officer; Mr Bezer, second officer; and Mr Grant, purser; Mr Ponsouby having exchanged into the Wakatipu. She looks remarkably well, having received a thorough overhaul and been fresh painted. Mr Grant reports leaving Port Chalmers at 6.30 p.m. on Tuesday, and having fresh head winds up the coast to arrival as above. The Taupo landed 60 and loaded 60 tons cargo at the Steamer's Wharf, sailing for Manukau, via Wellington and .West Coast, last night at five o'clock. Tuesday's Dunedin "Herald" says:—ln the article in our issue of Wednesday last, referring to the two steamers and the launch about to be constructed for the Union Company, the particulars in regard to the big steamer in course of construction for this company by Messrs. Denny Brothers, Dumbarton, were not quite correct. The exact dimensions are : —Length of keel, 285 f t; length over all, 300i't; breadth of beam, 35ft ; depth of hold, 25ft. Her gross register tonnage will be about 2000 tons, the boilers will be equal to 3000 horses, and they and the hull will be constructed of steel of the kind which is now being adopted by the Admiralty for their fast boats, and which gives strength and allows finer lines on a moderate draught. The new vessel will arrive iu August. She will be called the Botomahana. Besides those already referred to, another vessel is expected to arrive in February for the company's Sydney trade. She has a carrying capacity of 1200 tons, and will be called the Te Anau. In this connection it may be mentioned that shares in tho Union Steamship Company have steadily risen in value during the last few months, and that while there is no speculative excitement about them, they are gradually firming, the few floating in the market getting into the hands of holders who are not disposed to part with them. It is gratifying to be able to record this of a local company, which, though it has grown from small beginnings to its present large proportions, has had, like all prosperous concerns, • a season of difficulty which, in the opiuion of those who know it best, has now been surmounted. ABBIVAL OF THE NEW TUG. The Lyttelton Harbor Board's new tug Lyttelton, Capt Fox, arrived this morning. She was short of coal, and had to bring up inside the Heads. The harbor master, Capt. McLellan, went down to her in one of the hopper barges, intending either to supply her with sufficient coal to steam inside the Breakwater, or to tow her up. SHIPPING TELEGEAMS.
