CANTERBURY COLLEGE.

A special general meeting of the Board of Governors of the Canterbury College was held yesterday at 3 p.m. Present—Messrs \V. Montgomery (chairman), W. J. W. Hamilton, 11. R. Webb, J. N. Togawill, R. J. S Harmaii, R. W. Eereday, E. Wakefield, E. *'. J. Stevens, P. de c. Mulct, H. J. Tancred, C. C. Bowen, John Inglis, Hon. John Hall, Dr. Coward, Dr. Turnbull, and the Rev. C. Eraser. Tho Chairman said tho object of the special meeting being called was, to consider the report of tl e College committee n' the erection of the Boys' High School, and the site of the Girls' High School in Cranmer Bquare, the increase of the Professorial staff', »nd other matters connected with the College. As the discussion of these subjects would involve

questions of finance, and of matters concerning private persons, it would be advisable that the Board should go into committee. Mr E 0. J. Stevens thought that questions of such importance should be discussed openly by the Board rather than in committee. The Hon. John Hall spoke in favor of the Board's going into committee, as he thought that so many details would have to be gone into as to render such a procedure the most desirable. The Chairman then put the motion—" That the Board go into committee," which was carried. The Board then wont into committee. After a prolonged discussion on the matters for which the meeting had been called, the Bosird reported progress, and Mr F. de c. Malet said he wished to make a statement to the Board to the effect that an application was going to be made for a license for an hotel to bo erected at the corner of Gloucester street and Cambridge terrace, and he considered that in view of the Girls' High School being probably moved down into that locality, and that some twelve or fourteen private schools existed around the neighbourhood, it was most undesirable that the license should be granted. Under these circumstances a counter petition had been drawn up, which he trusted would be signed by the chairman in the name of every member of the Board, for presentation to the Licensing Commissioners at the next quarterly meeting. The feeling of the chairman, and of every member, was in favor of Mr Mulct's proposal, which was carried out by the chairman signing the petition. The Board then adjourned at half-past 5 p.m.
