The sail on the mizzen mast, which was made as snug as possible, was torn adrift and blown to ribbons. . It is reported that an excellent sample ot graphite has been discovered in tbe northern portiou of this province towards Taranaki. The schooner Cynthia had a narrow escape of foundering during the terrific gale while she was in the Straits. All the timber on deck was washed overboard, the vessel being pooped frequently. The captain and crew were in great danger from the timber washing about the deck. One man was almost washed overboard. Westport, November IG. The Eeefton coach met with another exceedingly narrow escape yesterday at Nine-mile Creek, where the mountain torrent washed the horses off their legs, swamped the coach, and endangered the passengers' lives. TiMAiiU, November 16. The inquest on the bodies of Mrs Drew and infant was held to-dayby Mr Beetuarn, Coroner A verdict of " Accidental death" was returned. The jury added a rider strongly animadverting on tho construstio i of buildings similar to the one wherein the accident occurred, und requested tho Coroner to forward their opinion to the proper quarters, that the erection of buildings might be properly supervised in future. It came out in evidence that the roof was not connected in any way with the walls of the building. Dunedin, November 17.
At yesterday's meeting of the University 'Council tho discussion of Judge Bathgate's motion, re disassociation of the Otago University ivom that of New Zealand, was further adjourned. The railway from Dunedin to Anderson's Bay is to be converted into a tramway. A case, of which the facts are as follows, will come before the Police Court tomorrow:— Three years ago a mother left her infant boy with an acquaintance to be adopted. The woman to whom the custody of the child was entrusted married shortly afterwards, an 1 died recently. The mother of the child then sought to have it restored to her, but deceased's husband objected to give it up. As the only means to regain her child, she has now laid a criminal information against the man in whose possession it is.

Auckland, November 17. Sergeant Crreen arrested a deserter named William Merys at Onehunga, who has been missing from H.M.S. Dido since 1875. He had just arrived from the South. Tho creditors in the estate of H. S. Meyers, who failed for ,£23,000, have just received sixpence in the pound. A woman named Sarah Monk, who had attempted to strangle herself while drinking, has "been remanded for a week. John Grey has withdrawn his candidature for the Mayoralty. The inauguration of the Teachers' Association was held yesterday, and was largely attended; an address was given by Mr "Worthington.
