CANTERBURY CRICKET ASSOCIATION.

A meeting of the general committee of the Canterbury Cricket Association was held last Friday at the Commercial Hotel. Mr E. C. J. Stevens occupied the chair. A letter was read from the secretary of (he Corio Club, near G-oelong, expressing surprise that the Canterbury team had pnssed over them in their list of Australian matches, and also expressing a great wish to play the team a two days' match, promising them a very warm welcome, and hoping they would yet be able to make the necessary arrangements. The writer stated that the club was the best in the colony outside of Melbourne and Ballarat, also that it had beaten a mixed Melbourne team on the previous Saturday.

After some discussion the secretary was requested to write to the club in question, expressing the regret of the Canterbury team at not being able to accept the challenge, as the whole of the time they had at their disposal was already taken up. A letter was read from the Otago Cricket Association, asking what date would be convenient to play the annual interprovincial match, so as not to interfere with the visit of the Canterbury team to Victoria. Also, while expressing be3t wishes for the success of the team in Australia, expressing a hope that they would bo able to play a match on their way home to Christchurch. The chairman said their usual time was from the 12th January to the 12th February inclusive, and the Christchurch team would not be back by January 12th. It was resolved to send an answer,'thanking the Otago Cricket Association for their consideration, at the same time, as they are the visiting team, leaving it to them to fix the date ot the Interprovincial match within tho prescribed limit, namely, between the 12th of January and the 12th February. With regard to the Victoria Match Team playing a return match in Otago, it was resolved that if the eleven returned via the South, and time permitted, an effort would be made to place a Canterbury team in the field against Otago in Dunedin, about the date of their return.

A vote of thanks was passed to Messrs Matson and Co. and the members of the Corn Exchange, for their kind permission to use their rooms at the late meeting. Mr Neilson moved —" That it bo a recommendation to the match committee to tako into consideration the advisablcness of playing all Association matches out, even if so doing should lessen the number of matches arranged." Seconded by Mr Secretan and agreed to. The Secretary stated that at the beginning of the season the ground committee drew up an estimate of receipts and expenditure for the senson. Everything was coming out right, except that their expenditure for labor was somewhat heavier than was anticipated. He expected that in a week or so they would he ablo to dispense with ono of the men on the ground. Mr Neilson drew attention to the state of the mowing machine, which wis not working very well. He thought it would be desirable to get a new machine. The Chairman read an estimate of the rccsipts and expenditure during the season. After the transaction of somo detail business, the proceedings terminated.
