Kaiapoi, November 15. 2.30 p.m. A severe nor'-west gale is blowing a perfect hurricane on the Plains and at Oxford. The Waiumkariri is rapidly rising, and railway traffic is expected to ba again stopped. Should the river overilow the line the damage at Stewart's will be very serious, as an alarming scour made by the overilow on Monday will lie carried on to tbc line in such a way that traffic will only be restored on the completion of the pile-work.
Great Storm at OamaruOamaku, November 15, 1.45 p.m. To-day we have been visited by a pale such as has never been previously known in these parts. It started at an early hour this moiiiiug, and it.ereased in force till ten o'clock, then gradually decreased till noon, at which hour it almost ceased. "Windows wire blown out in large numbers. Sheehan, accompanied by
Taiaroa, proceeded to the Upper Waitaki on Wednesday evening to settle the Native difficulty, and there met three hundred Natives, who gave a hearty welcome to Mr Sheehin, who thanked them. In a discussion lasting over an hour, the Natives urged many pleas in justification of their occupation of the squatter's lands. Mr Sheehan stated that his object in meeting them was to tell them they must immediately retire back to the West Coast settlements. At first they objected, on the ground that they had planted crops ; but, on Mr Sheehan saying that he would allow a few to remain to look after the crops, they agreed to comply. [PEB PRESS AGENCY.] Wellington, November 15. Dr. {Diver has visited Miss Wood, the Wainuiomata lunatic, for the purpose of subjecting her to medical examination. He says she is suffering from idiotic lunacy of a congential character. A very close examination of the patient was inadvisable, owing to ber violence ; but from appearances he thinks the patient ha 3 been well cared for by her relations.
