ASHBURTON RACING CLUB ANNUAL MEETING. Second Day—Thursday, November 14th. Stewards—Messrs E. Saunders, E. S. Coster, J. L. Crawloy, Thos. Bullock, M. Stitt, R. Friedlander, J. Carter, Hay T. Smith, Neil McLean, and C. H. Dowdmg. Judge—Mr J. Campbell. Starter—Mr W. B. Compton. Clerk of the course — Mr E. Saunders. Handicapper—Mr H. P. Lance. Treasurer—Mr S. Saunders. Clerk of the scales —Mr H. J. Bristo. Secretary—Mr Wilkie. The second day's racing, under the auspices of the Ashburton Racing Club, took place yesterday, and there was a very good attendance for a second day. The weather in the early part of tho morning was very pleasant, the few showers which fell during the night having cooled the air. Towards noon, however, a stiff nor'-wester blow up, making it most uncomfortable for the spectators owing to the clouds of dust which swept over the course. The various officials discharged their respective duties to perfection and commendable punctuality was again observed in starting the various events.
Sport commenced with the County Hurdle Handicap, for which six acceptors figured on tho card. Of these Lone Hand and Nellie Grey were the favorites, though Billy Buttons was fancied by some. He was out of the hunt at an early stage of the proceedings, as he stuck up just after passing the stand tho first time, and before Hankins, aided by the powerful persuasion of a stock-whip, could set him going again the other horses had got too much of a lead for him to have a chance of overhauling them, though he was ridden over the whole of the sticks. Nellie Grey and Lone Hand had the race pretty well to themselves from the start, and the former won by three lengths from Lone Hand, after a very good race. Three saddled up for tho Racing Club Handicap, which was justly considered a moral for Chancellor. He won almost as he liked from Lady Ellen, who, however, ran a game race. Littlo Arthur was never in it, and did not succeed in getting nearer to the leaders at the finish than the distance.
For the Publicans' Purse only Luna and Childington were starters, and the mare was at once installed as first favorite, a confidence which she justified by winning with plenty in hand. Four faced the starter for the Forced Handicap, in which Luna was again pulled comfortably. We append details: — County Handicap Hurdle Eace of 30 sovs, over six flights of hurdles, 3ft Gin high. Nellie Grey and Lone Hand were the first to show in front, going at a good pace, and jumping the first hurdle together. The Raven, Pakeha, Merlin, and Billy Buttons came noxt, in the order named. After passing the rails in front of the stand, Billy Buttons stuck up and was out of the race. Nellie Grey and Lone Hand, after crossing the second hurdle, had a good lead away from the others, Ncllio leading by half a length, The Haven was third, Pakeha fourth, and Merlin fifth. In this order they ran until coming to the third hurdle, at which The Raven baulked, allowing Pakeha to got into third place. At the fourth hurdle Nellie and Lone Hand still cutting out the running, Pakeha baulked, and Merlin came up and took third placo. At the turn Lone Hand made his effort, but was unable to head the mare, and a fine race ensued down the straight, Mr Sinilh landing Nellie a winner by three lengths from Lone Hand, Merlin four lengths in rear, the llavon fourth, and Pakeha fifth. A capital finish took place between these last three, Merlin only securing third place by a head. Racing Club Handicap, of 50 sovs. One mile and three-quarters. Mr H. The top weight being a non-acceptor, the weights for the event were raised a stone all round. This race was virtually a match between Chancellor and Lady Ellen, Little Arthur being unable to live with his horses from the jump. At the fall of the flag Webster set Lady Ellen going at a rare clinking pace, with Chancellor lying close up, and Little Arthur falling behind every stride. In this order they ran to the back of the course, Lady Ellen and Chancellor being on even terms. Here Derritt let Chancellor out, and led down the straight, ultimately winning by seven lengths from Lady Ellen. Little Arthur distanced. Publicans' FunsEof 30 sovs, weight for age, 1 mile. Mr W. F.
