MAGISTRATES’ COURTS.
CHRISTCHURCH. Thursday, November 14. [Before Q-. L. Mellish, l£sq , R M.] The only busim s» transacted at this Court to-day was the infliction of a fine of five shillings upon a first offender for intoxication, a id the committal of two lunatics to SunnySide Asylum.
LYTTELTON. Tiiubsday, Novembeb 14. (Before W. Donald, Esq., R.M.) Assisting- Seamen to Debebt —John Hanlon alias Dan Fitzgerald, was brought up on remand from yesterday, charged with aiding and assisting a seaman belonging to the United States brig Star, to desert his employ, ment. Captain Day produced the legister of the vessel, by which it was shown that the charge was properly laid, under the Foreign Seaman’s Act, 1860. After Mr Nalder, who appeared for accused, had addressed the Bench at considerable length, the Resident Magistrate said that, as this was the first case of the kind, he would not inflict the full penalty in this instance, but, giving accused a severe caution, fined him £3.
