MAGISTRATES’ COURTS.
CHRISTCHURCH. Wednesday, November 13. [Before GK L. Mellish, Esq, R Vl.] Deunk and Disorderly. —lsabella Leckie wa* fined 60s. VIOLENT Assault. —John Ross wag charged with violently assaulting his wife, Amy Ross. Amy Ross said that on the 9fh of November, between two and three o’clock in the morning, her husband came to her house and broke open the door, took her by the hair and, flourishing a knife, threatened to toko her life. It was not the first time he had abused her, end she considered that, when in liquor, her life wag in danger, but when sober he was quite a different man. The defendant swore the whole statement was false, as he had not seen her for a month until the present day. The complainants evidence was ut supported by any other testimony. His Worship said he was inclined to believe the complainant’s story. It was evidently a case of drink, and the defendant did not remember what had taken place. He would be required to enter into a bond for £lO to keep the peace towards his wife for twelve months, or in default a year’s imprisonment. LYTTELTON. Wednesday, November 13. [Before W. D maid, E q, R.M., and T. H. Potts, Esq., J.P.] Laeceny from Dicing.— Robert Hudson, on remand from Ashburton, was brought up, having fully recovered. This was (he fourth occasion upon which he had been imprisoned for a similar offence. The Bench asked the Eolice how many cases of lunacy from drink ad been brought in from Ashburton lately. It was an undoubted fact that more cases of this sort, came from Ashburton than any other part of Canterbury, and the Bench intended to draw the attention of the Commissioner of Police to this matter. Hudson was discharged with a severe caution. Assault. —Willi ma Buckman and John O’sen, on remend, were charged with assaulting Captain Valentine, of the b rque Mary Millar. Mr H. N. Nalder appeared for the prosecution and Mr Neck for the defence. The c aptain was re-examined hy Mr Neck. A number of witnesses were called for the do fence, end both the eoun-el having reviewed the case, the Bench c msidering Captain Valentine was the aggressor in Ohen’s case, di«mis»ed the case against him. Buckman was sentenced to one week’s imprisonment.
