England and Austria have notified to Russia that they have agreed on a treaty to compel her to evacuate Turkey, in accordanee with the Berlin Treaty. An official of the Native Department having obtained a block of 10,000 acres of native land north of Auckland, Government has ordered the Crown grant to be put aside pending an inquiry. Alderman McArthur has returned to Auckland after visiting Rotorua lakes. The reports from Thames River show that attempts to acclimatise the Californian salmon there have proved successful. The City of New York, with the London mails of October 10th, sailed from San Francisco for Auckland on the ult., her due date. The Zealandia from Auckland on 12th ult. arrived at San Francisco on the sth inst., two dajs in adivance of the due date.
The barque Carlotta, from Newcastle, with a cargo of over four hundred tons of coals, went ashore on Lighthouse Point, while beating into Wellington Heads, this morning, with a flood tide and heavy N.W. gale blowi g. Seas are washing over the vessel, and it is expected she will become a total wreck. By permission of the Government, the Stella will leave for the wreck at 2 o’clock. No lives werp lost. .£SOO on the hull and £IOO on the cargo in the Victoria.
Dunedin, November 9. The Volunteer review is now going at Forbury Park, and it is estimated there are about 2000 men on the ground. Colonel Whitmore and the Hon. J. Sheehan are present, and will be entertained at a banquet to-night by the officers of the various companies. Westport, November 9.
A narrow escape from a serious accident to the Eeefton and Westport coach occurred yesterday. While fording Ohika h iver the coach and team were swept down the stream several chains, only escaping by a miracle. People aro very anxious that Government should commence the construction of a bridge as soon as possible.
