CENSUS RETURNS.
The “ New Zealand Times ” publishes the following further tables of census returns, in anticipation of the complete abstracts. The following table shows the number of occupied holdings of over one acre in extent in the different provincial districts, and also specifies the large pastoral holdings over 20,000 acres
There arc 2,611,926 acres fenced in by fences of various descriptions exclusive of wire fencing, and 8,755,639 acres by wire fencing only ; making a total of land enclosed of 11,567,565 acres. In 1871 there were only 6,770,299 acres fenced in. There were at the time of taking the census 374 steam threshing machines, and 511 worked by horse or by water power ; 4829 reaping machines, 34 steam ploughs, and 32 steam harrows.
